Date: 6/22/07 8:39 AM Welcome to the fabric wasteland. I'm in Easton. When I was writing for sewing magazines I had to bite the bullet and make pilgrimages to G Street.
Unless you're looking for quilting fabric the chain stores are about it. There's a JoAnns in Easton and a Hancocks in Salisbury. Surely there must be chains in Wilmington? Or are you close enough to slip up to fabric row in Philly? -- Edited on 6/22/07 8:41 AM -- ------ Stephanie Corina Goddard |

Date: 7/3/07 8:50 AM G Street Fabrics in Rockville, MD (on the DC beltway) is worth the trip. It's about 6,000 sf, with enormous sections of suiting, designer fabric, evening fabric, quilting fabric and notions, and huge tables with outdoor wear fabric, cottons, stretch, linen, you name it. As a newbie who is prone to mistakes, my personal favorite is the enormous bank of clearance tables along the back wall- everything is $2.97, and a satisfying amount of it is excellent usable fabric (not just weird off-season stuff or damaged bolts). I know it's way out of the way, but it is worth a day trip a few times of year I feel (there's a million things nearby, if you're often accompanied by non-sewing family members).
More nearby, I used Jo-Ann's. It depends on what you want to sew- my sense was that they focused on quilters and baby-gift makers with a smattering of home decor fabric, but not a lot of depth in the apparel section. That said, I found it useful for basics or last-minute forgotten notions. The super stores carry a larger selection- I've been to the one in Columbia, MD but there might be a closer one to you.
Hope this helps! ------ Christina

Date: 7/4/07 3:44 PM Thank you all for your input. I live 1/2 hour North of Salisbury, MD in Delaware. I never heard of "G Street"! I will have to make the trip.
I have just arrived home from Hancocks in Salisbury. I have some good buys.. but nothing to brag about.
Many years ago, I used to work for a fabric store in Salisbury, MD., Dannemann's Fabrics. I really miss that store. They no longer exist. |
