I swear this topic was floating around last month, but couldn't find it doing a search.

I was up in the middle of the night, icing the neuroma in my foot, watching "Good Times" on TVland. Michael, the Evans youngest, was next door with Penny (aka Janet Jackson) in Willona's apartment. I knew that Willona's character designed clothing on the show, but hadn't paid attention to what she used when I watched the show the first time around, yes, in the 1970's!

Lo, and behold, there looked to be a Singer 201 or perhaps a 15-91 in a cabinet in the background. Perked me right up at 3:00 a.m., but never got a close up look at the machine! Anyone have an idea, or maybe they too were up in the middle of the night watching this too?

So, what else have we seen while watching t.v., movies and/or shows?

Colleen

ThinkGeek: "E-mail has been around since before computers. At first, e-mails were written on rocks and thrown at neighbors. CC-ing a rock e-mail could be dangerous for an entire village. Then, e-mails were written on paper and put in weird paper things called envelopes and the postal system delivered them. This was slow. Finally, e-mail as we know it came around."

The only sewing machines I see on TV are on episodes of "Designed to Sell", or occasionally other "fix-up" shows on HGTV. I always try to see what brand they are and sometimes am able to. I've seen Pfaff and Singer for sure and some that look like they might be Janome or Kenmore. You seldom are able to see the brand name. Guess they don't want to give the companies free advertising on HGTV!

Donna Reed had 2, one in a cabinet in the early shows, and one she could put on the dining room table in some of the later shows.

Samatha Stevens had 2, one where she designed a dress for a party, but ended up twinkling her nose, and one she had on the dining room table when she made Tabitha a dress.

One of the Cosby girls made Theo a shirt in year 1, I think, and showed that machine.

Brady Bunch girls were in a stamp shop looking at machines, and the man had 2, but they ended up with a TV.

Meet me in St. Louis had an old black machine in the moms room where they were making the boy an angel costume from Margie's old petticoat.

Home Alone had a machine in the mom's bedroom, and what looked like an industrial in the basement.

If anyone knows what these might have been, I would love to know.

I tried doing a "prop" search for Good Times and it didn't work. There has to be a source somewhere to find this out? Or maybe TIVO?

I wish TV Land would show "Donna Reed", "Bewitched" and the "The Brady Bunch" again...starting to show recently made movies.

I have "Meet Me in St. Louis" on DVD. I will see if I can freeze that frame. I LOVED "The Cosby Show" when Denise sewed the shirt for Theo...and I remember "The Brady Bunch" episode with the sewing machines and the tv. I would like to rewatch those just to see if I could figure out what sewing machines they did use.

A friend of mine is into movie and tv trivia, I will pick her brain about where we might be able to find out anything. Maybe not the older shows, but possibly "Home Alone" and "The Cosby Show" being new enough.

And to think, I used to watch for Breyer horses on tv shows and movies! (Yes, I do still spot them and note it for my "other" hobby.)

Wow...I thought I was only one wishing they'd bring Donna Reed back to TV Land!

I was watching an episode of According To Jim a few weeks ago and Cheryl was sewing at a Janome 4618 (if I recall correctly). The funny part was she was sitting at the kitchen table with the back of the machine towards her and the front of the machine towards the camera. Maybe Janome gave it to them if they promised to show the front of the machine!

I have a few projects that require some nose twinkling to get finished!

In the original Yours, Mine & Ours movie (with Lucille Ball & Henry Fonda), there's a scene where the dad is fixing his daughters' clothes for school & that scene opens with an old-fashioned looking White sewing machine in the foreground.

In the Godfather, Michael comes home and follows the sound of the sewing machine to the master bedroom, where his wife is sewing...something...looks like curtains. Can't see what kind of machine it is, though.

I just read in one of the gossipy magazines that Julia Roberts sews and built a sewing room in her fancy (but environmentally friendly) new house!

Part of the reason I like to watch Project Runway is just to see people sewing.

A few years ago there was a show called "Sister Sister" or something similiar about twin girls. The mom made her living as a custom clothier and there were several shots of her workroom and sewing machine over the series. This was a favorite show of DD2.

That's So Raven on Disney. Raven designs clothes, and if I'm not mistaken, I thought I saw an older model Bernina is what she worked on. Don't know if the show is still current.
