This add was in my local newspaper tonite. Anyone know anything about this machine? Should I be interested?

"BERNINA SEWING machine Inspiration Plus, in large cabinet with extension, chair and surger machine. Machine never used. Was $5,000 new, asking $1,250."

The Inspiration Plus is the Bernina 1630. It's the machine I have. I bought it new in 1994 when it came out, and I paid somewhere around $3000-$3500 (machine only). I love it!!! It's a classic and does everything I need...and then some.

Fabulous machine and very loaded with stitches of all kinds. Some are extra-wide maxi type stitches. Stitch width is 9mm. The price for a never-used 1630, plus a cabinet and a serger is terrific. I think used 1630's go for around $900-ish and they were indeed $4000-ish new when they were Bernina's top of the line just before the embroidery combo's came out. I don't really know how old the machine is at this point--maybe 10 years? Sounds like a great deal with that too-good-to-be-true ring to it so check it out and let us know!

OK, here's what I found out. It is owned by a 75 yr old lady. She bought it in anticipation of retirement, but she didn't retire when she thought she would and now she has problems with her eyes so she can't see well. Never used. The surger has been used a couple of times to surge towels. As stated in the article, it comes in a large cabinet with the extension table. A few months ago she put it in one of those humidity controlled storage units. She has the VCR tape and the manual on it. She can't remember what year she bought it but, she knows that she bought the Bernina and the serger from the same store. Can't remember the brand of the serger.

So, I'm meeting her at the storage unit at 3pm today. She said that she thought it had a plug in at the unit so we could make sure it works. I've never even sat down in front of a Bernina so I'm not sure what to check. What should I take with me and what all should I check on it? I'll make a list and check out everything I can. I could sure use any help you all could give me! I might call the Bernina dealership today and see what they have to say also.

Thanks!

There was an update for this machine in 1996. I don't know if it is still available or the particulars about it. - Perhaps someone that owns the machine can chime in with more details?

Test the bastingstitch. When it isn't used for a while it can develope issues. It can be fixed if it does have the "basting stitch disease"

ITA with jenny about testing the basting stitch. If it won't sew at all, it will cost you approx. $100 to get that fixed. Basting stitch must be run monthly for a few minutes, or the needle bar will finally lock up. Something to do with the lubricants, etc.

Bring quilters cottons, lightweight fabrics, some lining fabric, some thread & new needles (your own). Wind the bobbin and sew on it for at least 30 minutes. Make every buttonhole it offers on some interfaced fabric. Put it through its paces. Do some 1/4" seams if you're a quilter.

Also sew on the serger.

I have heard that the early 1630s had a few glitches and the later models had it worked out, but I do not know details. The feed dogs are wider than a standard machine. Some people like that, some don't. It only means the decorative stitches can be sewn out wider. Some people love their 1630s, some don't

Equipment that has sat for years will need an immediate service by a technician. Like cars, the oil & grease sits there unused and hardens.

Bernina ThirtySomethings is a Yahoo Group for this generation of machine.

I wouldn't waste another moment. Run, don't walk to get that into your own sewing room! What a bargain. I would be tempted to abandon all my machines and get that one if I saw that ad in my paper.
