Date: 2/2/04 4:12 PM I should like to request that "no pattern used" reviews have their own place elsewhere on the site. When I enter this site I want to read reviews of actual patterns, which is surely its original purpose. While I understand the need to show the world "look what I've done" -I do that myself, although not here - these postings don't seem to belong with the reviews. Another timesaver for me would be if the baby and childrens pattern reviews were separate. But really, these are nitpicking requests. I read and enjoy this site regularly. |

Thanks for your feedback. Actually the no pattern used reviews are very good for those of us who are trying to do something on our own. Same goes for the self drafted pattern reviews. I am always looking forward to these ones cause I learn sometimes how easy it is to make things without patterns. I made my grocery bag holder, ironing board cover like this.
But I understand your point of view also. No harm in that. We just have our own preferences.
Regarding the baby and kid reviews, you can search by category, Try the advanced search feature.

Some of us "have" to post a review of a self-drafted or no-pattern-used project so that we can enter it as a completed item in whatever contest is PR is running. I prefer reviews of commercial patterns myself, but if a reviewer describes exactly how she (or he...sorry) made something, then it will often give me one of those lightbulb moments - an idea for a sewing project or a new technique. It's amazing how these little ideas and tidbits of information can add up to a nice body of knowledge.------ “Never try to teach a pig to sing; it wastes your time and it annoys the pig.” -Robert Heinlein and Ann's father. Date: 2/2/04 8:04 PM I think no pattern used reviews are good even if you have a set pattern, due to the information, you may find some thing that was the answer to the problem you were working on. |

Date: 2/2/04 8:48 PM I like the "no pattern used" reviews as well. We all probably have our own favorite types of patterns, but I find I learn something from just about every review. |

Date: 2/3/04 10:33 AM I'm often inspired by the NPU-reviews because in most cases the results are great gifts or niffy little things, that everyone can use or great home-dec projects. From these things I learn a lot about how to handle a project without a pattern, in some cases because there is no pattern ( but if anybody finds a pattern for my couch, please let me know ). I'm thinking about trying that lap-top sleeve that Åsa Hagström has made in a smaller version without a handle for my digi-dam, without her review, I would have never thought of that! ------ read my blog:

Date: 2/3/04 1:35 PM Walksfrodo, (love your handle! ) your request and the comments here got me to thinking about the origins of this site. Initially, I think Deepika expected there to be a modest membership (perhaps a few hundred) and a correspondingly modest number of reviews. As this site's popularity has expoded in the two plus years of it's existence, things that worked beautifully in the beginning may seem a bit cumbersome now.
Perhaps the day will come when it will make sense to sort pattern reviews out into broad categories, such as men, women, children, home dec, craft, etc. But Deepika works very hard to keep this site useful, informative and very user friendly. It takes a lot of her time just to do maintenance, I'm sure. But someday, when time permits, perhaps she will reorganize the reviews.
Meanwhile, we are lucky to have an excellent sort feature of the reviews. And incredibly fortunate to have such a wonderful site. There is no other site on the net that I am aware of that provides this kind of information on this breadth and scale. Thank you, Deepika! ------ Life is mostly froth and bubble; two things stand in stone: Kindness in another's troubles, courage in your own. |

Date: 2/3/04 2:13 PM Just mt 2 cents....
I think if we had all the patterns in there own categories we would all miss out. For example I would never have looked at any baby things if they were in a seperate category, or handbags or mens....as it happens now I find the baby stuff very interesting, I was inspired to make a bag and DH gets a lot more stuff. I also made a top copied from a pattern someone had adapted themselves.
The fact is non of us have to look at a pattern and that is why they have search categories......so we can pick and choose.
I love the simplicity of this site and the ease of use. I personally don't think it needs to be any more complicated! ------ Lou |
