Date: 12/16/07 12:53 PM Was attempting to update my profile with some things, and first got an error message that said my name was already taken (I didn't change a thing on the form).
So I added an extra letter to the end and it changed my nickname (and also changed the stuff in my profile I wanted it to).
Now I can't change my name back... it says it's already taken... but I'm the one who already took it, and I can't get it back and I'm just REALLY confused/frustrated. :(
Help? ------ Becca

Date: 12/16/07 2:09 PM Hi there. Here's my best guess: user name's now have to be unique and there is probably someone else with the name Rosebee so when you went to change your profile, the validation check wouldn't let the change go through until you changed your user name to something unique. Hope that helps a little |

Date: 12/16/07 2:48 PM Rosebee, I had the same thing happen and I knew my name had already been taken, by me! I tried to send an e-mail as described in "help", but it goes to explorer, which does not work for me. I am trying to send another e-mail via my own Internet provider.
I am the one and only "Spicegirl" who is a PR member.
Hang in there, you are not the only one experiencing technical difficulties....

Date: 12/17/07 0:14 AM Looks like that once upon a time there was someone else with the name RoseBee.
She joined on 11/3/05, and last updated on that date.
It doesn't seem fair that people who signed up once, and aren't involved on the site at ALL anymore can 'namesquat' for lack of a better word.
I wonder if there can be some sort of rule that if someone doesn't log in or post or do something on the site in 12 or 24 months then their nickname is then released for others to use. ------ Becca

Date: 12/17/07 4:20 AM Computers...arggh indeed! I'm having the exact same problem in updating my profile where I keep being told I can't edit it because I already exist. I thought I was doing something really idiotic and came here to ask what it was, so glad it's not just me. Rosebee (or Rosebeee!) it seems to me that if you can't edit a profile that has the same nickname as someone else then you surely shouldn't be able to set a new one up either? Anyway hopefully someone IT smart will be able to help soon. ------ http://allisoncsewinggallery.blogspot.com/ |

Date: 12/17/07 7:13 AM Hi,
I'm having exactly the same problem. I have successfully updated my profile in the past, so I'm guessing there's some kind of glitch at present. I'm sure Deepika will sort this out once she has a chance.

Deepika has created new features for PR which are going to require unique usernames. In the past, duplicates were allowed but she mentions in this thread that a few days ago she eliminated that possibility. She also mentions that she will be setting a 6-month deadline for duplicates to be changed by the user before a site-imposed change to remove duplicates is made. ------ --

The other has a hidden profile. But it looks like you joined first so hopefully you'll be able to keep your username.------ --

Date: 12/17/07 9:12 AM I've got the same problem. I'm a very early member of PR and have a very common name. I have not been able to change my outdated profile for quite a while. I'd like to stay "Ann" so folks (including myself!) know who wrote what. If anyone has a suggestion, I'd love to know how to make Ann unique.
Thanks, Ann |

Date: 12/17/07 9:19 AM Sorry for the inconvenience you guys. I know that it doesn't seem fair that people who are not active on the site get to keep the name and believe me, I am working on a happy medium solution for this problem.
Funny, how I never thought that duplicate usernames will ever be a problem but that was when there were a total of 10 users of PatternReview
But in the meantime so we don't create even more duplicate usernames, I am afraid I have to impose that condition on the new profiles and on the ones which have duplicate usernames.
I just added some information on the edit profile page. Basically if your username is not unique, you'll see a small warning icon next to your username and clicking on it will explain what you need to do.
The date by which all usernames will be unique is May 1st 2008.
