Hi All,

Sorry for the delay in finalizing the contests for 2008. Here's what I have for you.

Contests
-----------
One Fabric (Silk/Cotton/Knits/Wool)
This will be a new contest for 2008. In this contest participants will enter item made from the pre-determined fabric. The item should be wearable and made from scratch. Only one item per person can be entered in this contest. There will be two winners (based on votes).

This month long contest will run 4 times (Jan, Apr, Jul, Oct).

UFO Contest
As the name suggests, in this contest items made before a pre-determined date will be finished. Two winners: one based on votes and the other based on a surprise condition. It'll be revealed after the contest is over. Any number of items can be entered in this contest.

Wardrobe Contest
Who doesn't need a wearable wardrobe. Like every year we'll do a wardrobe contest. Rules will be decided when the contest begins. There will be two winners based on votes. special condition: only PR members who have been on the site for more than 3 months can join this contest.

Designer Knock Off
Pick an inspiration piece and try to recreate that look in your sewing room. This is such a fun contest every year! Two winners:
One based on reader votes and the Second based on Judges' votes based on different criteria.

Charity Sewing
Sewing for charity - name says it all. Winner - PR will donate $50 to the charity of the winner's choice. One who enters the most items to be donated to a charity will win. I will try to get other companies to sponsor this contest as well.

Fitted Blouse Contest
This is also a new contest for 2008. Make a fitted blouse with darts and/or princess seams. Only wovens or stretch wovens are allowed. Only one item can be entered per participant. Winners - two based on reader votes.

Handbag Contest
Love this one! In this contest people will enter a handbag (evening bag/every day bag/tote bag). The bag should be lined. Two winners ; one based on votes and the other based on judges' votes.

Mini Wardrobe
Since we all love sewing wardrobe so much but not all of us can commit to a full blown wardrobe, this contest is the answer. In this month long contest will run twice in 2008 and will focus on just a few pieces (to be determined later). Winner (one) Based on reader votes.

Vintage Sewing
Just like this year, we'll run the Vintage Sewing contest again in 2008. We'll set more rules later when the contest manager has been announced.

Stash Contest - Fabric
Do I need to explain this? Make anything from your fabric stash and it counts. Only notions and lining materials can be purchased. What is stash? Fabric bought in 2007 or before. Winners - First Prize: Based on most yardage used. Second: Oldest fabric used.

Stash Contest - Patterns
In this, try any pattern from your stash which you have not tried before and it'll count. Winner: one - most new patterns tried.

Beginners Contest
Are you new to sewing? Show off your skills and enter the competition. I am not too sure about the rules but perhaps we can discuss this in a separate thread. Winner: First: Judges votes. Second: Reader votes

Lined Jacket Contest
This is another NEW contest for 2008. The name says it all. This does not include fleece or quick type of jackets. Only one item can be entered per person. Winners will be decided based on reader votes. Two winners.

Sewing for kids/babies
Enter items sewn for your little ones. Winners: two based on reader votes.

Costume Contest
This contest will run in the Fall when we all get ready to make cool Halloween costumes. Winners: two based on reader votes.

Accessory Swap Contest
I've been meaning to do a Swap on PR for a while and now based on your feedback we're doing it finally! Swap is basically a round robin/secret santa type of a contest in which each person either makes one or more items to send to the other one. Clearly more discussion is required on this one, so I'll start a new thread soon.

Holiday Sewing
Holiday/ Gift Sewing. Nothing more needs to be explained here. More rules will follow as time comes closer to the contest. Winner - one based on reader votes.

Endless Combinations
You will recognize this contest if you were here in 2005. It's a fun contest in which you start with either an item you make or something in your wardrobe. The following piece needs to go with that piece. As you move forward, you'll notice how you'll automatically end up with a wardrobe! It's really cool. More rules will be explained when this contest begins. Winners: Two first based on votes and second based on judges votes.

New Techniques Contest
Gotta love this contest. It pushes you to try something you haven't tried before. Each new technique you learn will count towards your final points. Winner - one based on number of techniques used.

Home Decor
Show the love for your home by entering this contest. Make pillows, cushions, bedroom sets, curtains, bathroom decor.. you get the idea. Winners two based on reader votes.

My Pattern
Using any patternmaking technique, create your own pattern and enter it in the contest. Only wearable items are allowed.

Now you've noticed that some contests are judged by judges. Who are these judges? I will invite a panel of 3-4 members on PR to act as judges and together we will set up some criteria for judging that type of a contest just like in Iron Chef

Make your own Grocery Bag
A brand new eco-friendly contest! Don't you just hate to throw away those plastic bags? Wouldnt you like to be "Green" as well as stylish? Well, now's as good time as any to whip out your own cool grocery bags and take them shopping with you.

Now for the timeline so you can start adding to your calendars.

Now, I need volunteers to manage these contests. What is involved in managing a contest?

a) If the rules need to be set, come up with a set of rules and send them to me 2 weeks prior to the contest.
b) create and manage the contest board.
c) manage and moderate the items entered in the contest report.
d) Announce the winners when the contest is over.

Please let me know which contest you'd like to manage.

Wow, lots of great new contests this year!
I think I'm most intrigued by the Mini Wardrobe Contest - I especially like that it will happen twice in the year. If I moderate the one in May, can I participate in the August contest?
I've never managed a contest before, but I'm willing to give it a shot.

I'm really excited about these contests! I admit that I've just popped on to see if they've been announced! (my MIL arrived yesterday from England for three weeks and just went to bed.)

What a great variety and they are spread out well throughout the year.

Thanks so much for all of the time and consideration that you've put into working out which contests to run and into the schedule.

What a great list of contests! I'll manage the Handbags in April if you don't already have someone lined up.

What a great list! I am so excited.
I love the contests as they really help me have a goal in my sewing and even try new things (e.g. vintage)

That is an exciting list. I loved participating last year and I want to do it again. I do well with deadlines. Time to look for a designer to knock off!

Terry, Cidell and Peggy, I've added you as managers for the contests you request. I really need managers for One Fabric and UFO in Jan so I can set these up.

Hi Deepika,

I can manage either one of these January contests - my first preference is for the UFO contest since, unfortunately, I have so much experience with UFOs

If you are in a complete bind, I'll help with one fabric, especially since I suggested it!

I've no experience managing the contests, so if nobody else comes forward and you're desperate, I suppose I'm better than nobody! (or perhaps not. )

There's a possibility that I'll be moving after the new year, but I don't think it will be too disruptive as it would be a corporate move and is only 2 1/2 hours away from where we are now.

Most days, I check in anyway. :)
