Truckin' along tracing and cutting out a pattern from a Burda Easy Fashion Spring/Summer 2007 feeling pretty proud of my rusty German until I hit this:

Unterlegstreifen für Stepperei

Huh?

The best translation I can find is "underlay strip for quilting". Does that make sense with the context?

unter can be under
streif = strip
stepp = stitch

Maybe stitch a supporting strip (stabilser?) to the wrong side of something? I'm only guessing though.

Thanks everyone. Yeah, Unterlegstreifen, to the best of my understanding is underlay strips, but what the heck is Stepperei?

Ooooo Belinda! I think you've got it. It does look to be a stabilizing strip for a seam.

The great PatternReview Sisterhood does it again!! :-)

HIi, I can help...It's a stabilizing stripe to put under the area that you'll be top stitching. It's 11 o'clock at night and I'm on my way to bed. I hope you're on the way the the machine!!!

I am a bit late but Stepperei means decorative stitching or top stitching.
