Date: 1/13/08 9:00 PM I purchased silk Dupioni today at Joanns in hopes of making a bridesmaid dress for a friends upcoming wedding. The Dupioni is 100% silk. I like how the Dupioni looks the way it is, the slubs, the sheen, and the hand are perfect. I did take a swatch of fabric and put it in the washing machine and dried it in the dryer and left another swatch to air dry, but I do not like they way that they came out. I still need a way to pre-treat this fabric. I can get it dry-cleaned, I am just afraid that they will mess the fabric up. I have also heard others discuss laying the fabric on a bed and steaming it. I was wondering if it would be possible to use Dryel, the drycleaning stuff you put in the dryer.
I should also say that I do plan to wear this dress more than once. So do you have any suggestions? I really need your help. Thanks. ------ Ariane

Date: 1/13/08 9:17 PM I don't think you need to do anything. Just make up the garment with the fabric as is, and make sure whenever you clean it, you get it dry cleaned.
If you use the PR search box & look for "dupioni", you'll find a ton of really helpful information. I made a skirt last fall and got some really good advice (mostly on linings) on this thread. |

Date: 1/14/08 5:32 AM The general rule of thumb is pre-treat the way you will clean the garment.
P.S. In this case, don't hesitate to make the garment w/o pretreating the fabric. Then dry clean it afterwards. At worst, it might shrink and you won't be able to wear it. But more likely it will be fine.

Date: 1/14/08 4:48 PM I made my wedding gown of silk dupioni; I didn't pretreat for the same reason mentioned--I only planned on wearing it once! If I ever get around to it I plan to donate it somewhere and would probably need to dry clean it first. Also, use caution with the iron--I read that ironing directly on the fabric can remove some of its luster. I didn't have this problem personally, but I bet it would show more on a richer colored fabric than on my whitish ivory. Good luck! ------ 2009
