I am going to LA in mid February and will be staying downtown. I would love to shop for fabric, of course. Any locals have favorite places? I know that Mood is there, which I will visit, but would love to hear about other interesting places.

You might like to browse through the Fashion District website.

If you have transportation, F & S Fabrics is worth going to. There are two reviews HERE and HERE.

Nancy, you won't want to miss the International House of Silks and Woolens on Beverly Blvd, near, but not in, Beverly Hills They have been there forever and have tons of stuff. Let me know if you need more location info.
Of course, there's the fashion district downtown too.

F&S (W. LA on Pico) is a long-standing independent...large store with additional home dec store across Pico.

I also like International...but find more at F&S usually.

The "garment district" is close to my old office downtown. It can be confusing for a first-timer...if you have little time, then go to Michael Levine's for a quick peek. There are hundreds of little garment kiosks around the area. Saturday is fun...much like an international festival. Parking can be difficult. There are open lots and I think I used to also park on a rooftop garage next to Michael Levine.

I'd take a taxi if you are staying downtown.

There is an excellent fashion magazine stand inside the apparel mart. They have sample Friday's (or used to) where you can go from showroom to showroom and look for sample sale racks. Some participate and some do not.

Keep in mind the garment district has a lot of poly junk. But some treasures also.

Short on time, I'd go to F&S and International. Michael Levine's has never been a favorite of mine, but some love it. There is a wool wholesaler downtown (apart from the district) that is good, but the name is escaping me now...I'll come back and update when my brain warms up...I think you can go in and buy pretty easily.

Also, there is a good Thai restaurant near the garment district, I'll research the name and get back also...

Definitely visit the garment district, they have great deals there. Micheal Levine's is by far the best. On one side of the street is all home dec fabrics and a bargain fabric loft upstairs. Across the street they have apparel and craft fabrics.
