Hi
I was in Joann's the other day and looking at the clearance fabric. I think it was the moleskin (with lycra) that I found various colors scattered around. It was marked $5/yard with a clearance sticker. It wasn't always easy to see but the original price was $4.96/y. So clearance, in this case, meant making an extra 4cents/yard and preventing anyone from using their coupons on it.
When I asked about it, the young cutting-counter woman replied, "yeah, we don't do it; they do it". It was hard to figure out what she meant but with prodding she said "Joann headquarters or whatever". Then she told me she'd honor the lower price saving me 4cents/yard but wouldn't apply my 40% off coupon. So I didn't get it on principle.
I thought it was sort of funny.....and a sneaky tactic....mark it up for clearance and toss it in a pile to make it hard for people to shop for it. I guess it makes us feel like we've gone scavenging and won when we find the right color and it's on sale. I'm glad I didn't really want it.

You know I had wondered about this because I saw fabric on the clearance that I thought wasn't much more regularly when it was regularly prices. Shame on them! There are some people who won't buy unless it's on "clearance" obviously Joann's knows that.

Oooh it just burns my butt when companies do that! Joann's isn't the only one either; I read a Consumer Reports article that called out Sears, Macy's, Kohls and some other big name department stores. Yet another reason we should support the small and/or independent shops!

This is really annoying to have happen. I will be on the lookout for their tricks next year when I am no longer on the fabric fast. Thanks for posting about this.

I often wait for a sale to buy something that I consider too expensive, only to find out the discount has been taken off a price that is higher, so it ends up costing the same. I've started taking notes about which things I want so I can be sure the sale is for real.

I'm going to watch for this and will definitely bring it to the manager's attention if I see it here. That would be soooooo irritating!

I'm sure it was. I've noticed this before too, but I thought maybe I was just confused about fabrics and let it go. I also noticed this at my Hancocks store when they were being liquidated. Half the fabrics were "marked down" to their regular price.

Yes, it was with a red $5 dot....most of the time covering the regular price.

Hi. I work for JoAnns and I am going to give you a new perspective on this. This is probably something you are not aware of. What often happens in these situations is that the fabric has been around for a while. Then at some point the price goes UP for whatevery reason (usually due to the manufacturers prices on certain fabrics going up to cover expenses such as gas). But as there are HUNDREDS of fabrics and all of two or three employees to re-price them, many get missed. Then within a certain period of time the manufacturer discontinues the fabric, and the store still has some on hand, so it discounts it. If the mark up was never caught to start with, it will have the original price on it, but the markdown will be off of the current price. Sometimes the red tag will then be higher than the original price on the bolt.

This happens A LOT! I work at JoAnns and I can tell you from first hand experience that we get most of the markdowns but the mark ups are much trickier and there is often not enough personel working the fabric section...dispite the fact that fabric and notions account for over 65% of Joanns buisness.

Now I am not saying that it's impossible for a company to use shady tactics, but in the time I have worked for JoAnns (and previously Hancocks) I have yet to come across the scenario you are discribing. That is to say, it is usually a "markup gone bad". So, I felt I needed to come to the defence of my employer as I have never seen them do anything like that before.

However, you should check with the manager to make sure there is not some mistake. The employee you spoke to sounds unrealiable at best and gave you a half hearted answer.
