Today I saw in a home textile and other decor store some simple cotton woven fabrics. Some had cute kid patterns, others just white with blue grid on it.

The price was 279 Swedish crown -or $46.73. I almost asked if it was for the whole bolt, but instead just walked out without buying anything. Ok, the price does include 25% VAT, but even in Sweden, you can by pretty nice fabric for that price, and this was not it...

If I lived in an area where you could wear a coat several months of the year and if I needed a dressy coat for work, I would spend that on a good durable, beautiful coat fabric since I know I would get a ton of use out of it.

I might spend that on just enough of a beautiful fabric to make a collar, cuffs and covered buttons for a great jacket, but I wouldn't need more than a quarter yard probably--1/2 yard at most if the collar is big and the fabric narrow.

I might in another life spend that on fabric for a really nice bra/panty set. In this life, I have other priorities.

i spent $65/yd on some imported italian silk brocade for my daughter's senior prom (in 1995) along with matching taffeta (also imported italian silk) at $22/yd. it's a good thing she is sooo short.
Prom Dress

but other than a special occasioin, i would not spend that much.

A wool winter coat, but only if I had perfected my sewing skills to the point where I knew the results would be worthy of the investment. Also I might spend this much on something I only needed 1/4 or 1/2 a yard or meter of -- a beautiful little purse or pillow, or a small gift for someone.
Oh all right, and if I were ever to get married again (sigh) and felt inspired to sew my wedding outfit, I might splurge that much on the fabric.

Tightwad Donna here.

There is NO fabric I'd spend $46/meter on.

No way. Not going to happen. I am too cheap.

I also am on the cheap side but confess to having bought lots of ultrasuede yardage when daughter was showing horses to do yokes, cuffs, chaps, and show vests. One shirt/vest had several hundred dollars of svarovski crystals and ultrasuede fabric in its composition. These outfits were worn quite a bit and she really really loved the attention they would garner when showing. If this sounds excessive, some sported custom wear that easily crunched a $1000 and up. A quality hat for western pleasure usually adds another $350,ditto boots. She never asked me for anything much so I tried to do her show clothing to look as nice or nicer than what others were wearing. What was I sporting at the shows? Why of course a cheap t shirt or blouse from the $1 table and jeans. It was worth every penny spent on the clothes I sewed to see how happy she was with her gear and her horse. I have trouble mostly spending lots on fabric for myself- it has to be something I want badly to shell out the big $$$$.

A few years ago and indy fabric ( is now out of business) had some fancy embroidered lace fabric for $225.00 a yard and several people purchased it is what they told me. Usually India's for wedding sari's I believe.

Silk jersey - but it would have to be a perfect print or colour.

Also, leather.

Never. My limit is $25. I have gotten some really nice fabrics for under $25 so I decided (for myself) that any fabric up to that price is "good enough".

Plus, I tend to make stupid mistakes while sewing and I would hate to mess up while using really expensive fabric.

As for the most per yard, I plead the fifth..
But, the fabric that you are talking about doesn't sound like anything special, and for a high price I expect something very special. As other have mentioned, it depends on how much you will wear it, (like a winter coat worn for years) or a wedding dress that is a once in a lifetime occasion...
