Welcome to the Official Thread for the 2008 MY Pattern contest!

RULES:

Objective: A finished garment made from the participant's own design and/or original pattern.

Definitions:

"Block": In this context a block is defined as a basic pattern which fits the individual. A block (or sometimes called a "sloper") does not have any design elements.

"Pattern": In this context a pattern is a derivative of the block or draping process used to create the final garment, or is the result of original drawing if a block or draping is not used.

"Draping": In this context draping is the art of manipulating fabric on an individual or a dressform to achieve the desired garment. A draped garment may or may not originate from a block and it may or may not result in a paper pattern.

1. This contest is open to all members (free or FoPR) who have been members for at least 90 days prior to the start of this contest. 90 days = member since March 3, 2008 or earlier. Those who vote for a contest winner also must have been members for at least 90 days prior to voting.

2. This contest will run from June 1st, 2008 to July 31st, 2008.

3. Blocks can be pre-existing and can be from any source, including a commercial fitting shell such as McCall's 2718 and blocks generated from pattern software. See limitations on pattern software below.

4. If a pattern is used, the pattern must be entirely the participant's own creation. Pattern can be derived from a previously created block (see definition above). Pattern should not have been copied or morphed from a commercial or someone else's pattern. Even if you are inspired by some designer's design, you have to still create your version of it. All cutting and sewing and pattern creation (or draping) will be done within the two months the contest is running.

5. Pattern can be created by any method - such as measurements, draping, flat patternmaking, or Computer Aided Design. If using a computer to draft, CAD computer programs are allowed only as a manual drawing tool and as a subtitute for pencil and paper. Shortcuts to add seam allowances, markers or rotate darts, for example, are allowed but no programmed (via macros or program options) or non-original pattern pieces or design/style elements are allowed. Please ask the contest manager (Debbie Cook) if you are not sure if your process will be allowed.

6. One entry per person. An "entry" may be one garment or a coordinated outfit.

7. A WIP (work in progress) review should be started for each entry (either public or private) documenting the entire process, including photographs of the block (if used), the draping in process (if draping), and the finished pattern pieces (if pattern pieces were created). It's understand that you'd rather spend time designing and sewing, but the documentation will be educational for all and will also help decide who the winner is. Plus it's a good journal entry for you too.

8. When the garment(s) is/are complete, three clear photographs (front, back, side) of each completed garment in the entry should be added to the review. Photographs should either be on the person for whom the garment is designed or the dressform.

9. Winners will be deteremined by reader votes. Voting will begin on August 2nd and end on August 12th.

10. Prizes: Sponsored by Wild Ginger. www.wildginger.com

First Prize: Choice of any one of the 5 PatternMaster software programs. Value of prize up to $200.

2nd Prize: Winner gets WildThings! Vintage software, WildThings! Pets software & Click&Sew Software of their choice (Total value of $105)

A Sidenote: All of the contests on PR are based on the honor system. It's hard to judge an entry for fitting because it all depends on how good the photograph is. And yet, since we all strive to achieve the best fit we can with each of our projects, it's important to remember that if you follow the rules and be true to yourself, you are the winner, no matter what.

The rules for this contest were established prior to the formation of the contest committee - so officially I don't think we have anything to say about the rules.

That's my understanding too. Also, when Deepika announced the Contest Committee, she stated, "The committee members have also decided that they will not participate in any contest for which they've set the rules."

Since the committee members did not set the rules for this contest, I don't think there's any potential conflict. To that end, I know that Marji had an interest in this contest before there ever was a Contest Committee. (See prior contest discussion here.) I would hate to see her excluded because she *volunteered* for the Contest Committee. If she wants to join this contest, it is OK with me as the contest manager (and just an ordinary PR member who participates in contests from time to time). If anyone thinks this isn't "fair," well ... all I can say is what my mother has told me my whole life: Life. Is. Not. Fair.

From this point onward though, I ask that Marji limit her participation in this thread to "contest entrant" and check her Contest Committee hat at the door.

If anyone needs any more info about this, please PM me or request that I PM you.

Thanks everyone!

Just a heads up. April 2 is really only 60 days prior to June. I think you mean to say March something.

I can't commit to entering (though I'd love to), but this process will be so much fun to watch. It's our very own Project Runway. Carry on, everyone, and good luck.

You, clearly, are YOU. They got nothin' on you.

I'm going to watch along-- this contest will be great to watch. I want to be one of the people who gets invited on the show to have a design made for her.

Sounds like Karla is volunteering to be Tim - she certainly has the wit!

I joined today as well - I've been looking forward to this one for months. Can't wait until June 1. The date is circled in red on my calendar.

Suo ergo maledicto

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary. - Steve Jobs
