Date: 7/19/08 8:06 PM Since moving, we finally decided to buy a new bed and two nightstands to coordinate with the antique pieces in our bedroom.
We'd been sleeping on our mattress for twelve years but held off buying something because it's an English bed. Because the sizes are different from US standard sizes, we knew we would have to replace the entire bed.
Well we bit the bullet and bought the new furniture then went mattress shopping. DH was really keen on a Tempurpedic, while I was wary of spending so much on one. However, we felt after such a long run on the last mattress, we deserved to treat ourselves.
Yesterday, our new king size Tempurpedic arrived! It is soooo comfortable! I hope the first night isn't a fluke and that it will be great for the long run.
Does anybody else have one? What are your experiences? ------ A bad day in the sewing room is better than a good day at the office.

Date: 7/20/08 0:08 AM The good news about the memory foam (tempurpedic, swedish foam, others) is that it conforms to the body and is warm.
The bad news about the memory foam is that it conforms to the body and is warm.
If you have bony, not-well-padded parts that hurt from lying on a regular mattress, the foam is likely to be really comfortable, assuming that you can get out of bed without difficulty.
If you do have difficulty moving, the cocoon you might get into when the foam molds itself around your contours may make it hard to get out of bed or even to roll over.
If you are cold all the time, you'll love the memory foam, but if you tend to be warm, or are having hot flashes in the night, you might find it to be a torture device.
I like latex foam just fine. Cushions without being too hot and it pushes up, rather than gives way, so that you don't end up in a ditch in the mattress. It's cheaper, too. ------ Fictionfan |

Date: 7/20/08 1:00 PM we have one! Just bought it when we moved to the new house this past March.
I love it love it love it!!!!!
I don't get too warm (though I've heard that from others) and am fairly bony so the way that it cushions me is a dream. I got one that wasn't the firmest, didn't have a pillow top, but was very middle of the road in firmness. The pillow top one was way too soft and squishy and I felt like I couldnt get out of it!
We got the pillows, too, and love them!
It gets a bit softer over time, like breaking it in, but I don't really feel like it was noticeable. |

Date: 7/20/08 2:53 PM Night #2 and I cannot believe how well I slept last night!!!!
We bought the pillows too. I found the one that I have is too thick. My son loves his (got two for the kids) which is a thinner one. We're going to swap tonight and see how that goes.
I can't wait to go to bed! ------ A bad day in the sewing room is better than a good day at the office.

Date: 7/20/08 3:16 PM We bought a very expensive traditional mattress and ended up hating it. All along I told DH that I wanted a tempurpedic and he said absolutely not. So finally, after a couple years on this 'so-called' top of the line mattress, fighting with the company about their warranty or lack thereof, we bought a memory foam.
Instead of an expensive one though, we bought a cheapie version off Overstock. It was the best $350 I've ever spent. We've had it almost a year now and love it. I'm a hot sleeper and still don't have any issues with it.
We figured we'd give the cheap one a try and if we didn't like it we'd move it to our RV, but we've like it so much we haven't moved it. ------ http://kimsewsilly.blogspot.com/ |

Date: 7/20/08 6:52 PM I have been looking at the costco versions and there is one on amazon too, and the reviews indicate that the ones for $700 less (or even more) are almost just as nice as the original.
So you ladies don't miss the bounce? I sat on a little square sample of one at Costco. It felt very weird!
My lower back is really needing a new mattress. I have one of those pillow tops, it was real expensive. But its old.

Date: 7/20/08 9:31 PM We bought our Tempurpedic mattress set six years ago and it has been great. It was the final step to me getting rid of chronic back pain. It is a little warmer than a normal mattress but not a problem for us. I have no trouble getting out of the bed, even after a surgery. In fact, because my body is rather 'bony', it relieves the pressure points and I don't hurt so badly in the a.m. |

Date: 7/20/08 9:48 PM We bought a pillow top about a year and a half ago. It has not held up well at all. DH now wants a sleep number system, but it's out of our price range. I'm not so sure about what I want. ------ Marilyn

Date: 7/20/08 9:54 PM I bought a couple of name brand memory foam pillows a couple of years ago -- regularly some ridiculous price, on sale for almost nothing. I now know why! They were so hard and uncomfortable I couldn't use them. I'm not sure if others have had this experience, but I think it's worth doing a test drive or two with memory foam products before you commit to an entire mattress. I can't remember what I ended up doing with the pillows (Goodwill? or maybe the store took them back?).
Glad your experience has been good, though, Kellie!

Date: 7/20/08 10:53 PM I know a couple that bought the Tempurpedic, did not like it and returned it within their 90 days, bought a Sleep Number system bed and love it. Like sewing machines, no one mattress is perfect for everyone.
The 90-day guarantee is a good deal, IMO. |
