I am new to using a serger. When I am working on a new garment, do I serge the raw edges of the pattern pieces before I sew them together? Or do I serge after I sew?

On wovens, if I want serged edges and then intend to join the pieces on your sewing machine, I serge the raw edges of the pattern pieces before I sew them together.

On knits and sweater knits, I usually join the seams with the serger, press the serged seam to one side, and topstitch on the right side with my sewing machine about 1/4" from the seam line. --Lily

For me, it depends on the garment. Example, if I have a zipper that I'm inserting, I will serge the raw edge first, then stitch the 5/8" seam stopping where the zipper will be inserted. Then there are cases where I'll place the material right sides together, and will serge my seam...sure I may not be doing the 5/8" seam...but I like cheating when possible
