Date: 12/29/08 4:53 PM Ooh! That sounds like so much fun! Unfortunately, that is the weekend of my eldest son's birthday. He's turning 11, and wouldn't understand if Mom had planned to be out of town that weekend.
I hope you have a great time! Be sure to tell us all about it when you return. I'll bet you pick up some great tips and loads of inspiration.

Date: 12/29/08 9:56 PM I went last year for the first time and took alot of sewing fashion classes and learned alot....By far, to me the best classes are those that are hands-on, where you can at least try a technique and end up with a sample. I loved the day before, full day class....it was pants fitting and a real learning experience with alot of homework beforehand. There may be old threads from last year and/or reviews. I also liked being with others who sew.
As in any thing like this there were classes and teachers I liked alot and others where I got less from the class.
I have printed out the brochure and am wondering if I want to go again so soon...especially since I am re-organizing my sewing room/stash and know I may be better off sewing up some of my own stuff that is tnt. Am also planning to go to a Claire Schaeffer class in CA later in 2009... again I like hands on better than lecture format.
If you have not gone before though, Atlanta is not far away and it provides an opportunity to take classes and shop the expo! PM me if you have specific questions about some of the classes, I might be able to help. ML |

Date: 12/29/08 10:06 PM Adrienne - I think it's worth it. I really enjoy it and am willing to drive 4+ hours (one-way) to Atlanta again this year. I would have to fly across the country to access this much sewing knowledge in one place.
I always take a lot of classes. The 1-hr. ones are mostly demos, sometimes 'infomercials,' but even those have some useful tip I can take home. The workshops are longer and often better, if you have the time. The "hands on" ones are really great and machines are usually provided for those.
I like shopping the vendors, since most of it is geared toward garment sewing. Many of the teachers will have a vendor booth. There are machine embroidery supplies, and even a couple vendor booths for knitters. All the sewing machine brands have booths and usually some 'show specials.'
If you have extra time, Gail K's Fabrics in Atlanta is a great place to shop.

Date: 12/30/08 8:37 AM I've gone for the past two years, but am unsure if I will go this year. I did get a lot of knowledge and fun from going. I love Cynthia Guffy's classes and would take one of hers any time. I've never taken one from Louise Cutting and am very tempted to go just for that. But I also am overwhelmed by my stash and planned projects and afraid to add to those by being tempted by all those luscious offerings... |

Date: 12/30/08 9:00 AM emelle - I've been on a stash diet for the past year. Except for a nice linen I bought from Barb Callahan, I didn't buy any fabric. (don't ask about my other purchases, though. LOL) I'm just saying, it is possible to go and not buy fabric. Well . . . much fabric.

Date: 12/30/08 9:24 AM I will definitely be there, at least on Thursday. I'd like to stay for Friday, as well; it will remain to be seen if the schedule will permit:)
Every year at the Expo, on Thursday evening, a group of us meet for dinner at La Madeleine's. You are all invited to join us (just let us know you are coming, in case we need to reserve the 'back room'.)
Some years I take classes, and some years I just scout the booths. No matter what I do, this is the weekend that recharges my sewing batteries! There are free exhibits and fashion shows, and the samples in the vendor booths are always fun to look through.
I hope to see you all there!

Date: 12/31/08 1:49 PM I got the email too and skimmed over the classes...there are LOTS I want to take.
But this year is up in the air...DH is going to take a metal smithing class in MO just a couple of weeks later and I'm not sure the budget could take two hits in such a short time.
But I *do* want to go (yes, Adrienne, it's absolutely worth it!) ------ Lisa -- so much fabric, so little time!

Date: 1/5/09 3:30 PM I signed up for my Expo classes today. I'm taking some Home Dec. ones from Pam Damor, and both of Cynthia Guffey's collar classes. I'm really looking forward to them. |
