I've had my Elna 744 for several months and have threaded many times.  I tried to thread for a wide cover stitch last night.  Wasted about 2 hours of my time and the thread continually broke.  I changed all 4 threads and rethreaded and rethreaded.  I made sure I was putting everything in the proper place and did them one at a time as u are supposed to.  What else do I need to try before I go home tonight & cry?  thx

Which thread is breaking?

There's an elna sergers mailing list at Yahoo!groups; seach on elna serger.

However, I had a lot of trouble getting started with my coverstitch.  I have the 744, too.  I'd be happy to answer questions here.

I'm a happy coverstitcher, these days.

It's the first thread on the left that starts. then they all   break.  I didn't have much luck on the elnasergers group.  thx neefer

You asked this on the mailing list?  Then I've probably already answered with what worked for me.

My problem was with the left most thread breaking, too.  For me, it looked like the left most needle was coming unthreaded w/o the thread breaking.  If you are going slow, you can stop and untangle the threads before the thread actually breaks.  But the following method works better.

I was having problems maintaining the tension from the thread tails, and what has worked for me is to hold the thread tails taut when I start serging.  I either serge slowly or I hand turn the wheel until there are enough stitches in the fabric so that the thread tails have moved back behind the foot.

I also like Bryden's method of finishing the coverstitch.  She posted to the files section of the e-mail list.

Debbie, I have the 744 also.  Sorry I can't respond to your question.  I know I have used the wide coverstitch on mine and don't recall having any problems.  Maybe Sewing World Commons has a thread running on the Elna 744 you might check out.

I love this serger, much easier to thread and use than my Viking 1003.

Debbie, I have the same problem with my Elna 945 cover hem stitch.  Either the left thread breaks, appears to become unthreaded (don't know how it manages that little magic trick) or skips stitches, left thread only.  I've had the machine checked twice at the shop, but still no luck; this problem has literally reduced me to tears.  If anyone has any further suggestions with dealing with this problem, I'm open to any ideas at this point.
