Date: 1/16/09 9:50 AM I LOVE my OTT light, but I've found that it's just not directional enough at times - I can't get it where I need it. My sewing (Janome HT 2008) machine has a light under it, but it's barely adequate. I've been thinking that I'd buy a cheap goosneck lamp, and put an OTT or some sort of daylight bulb in it. Well, my family is visiting from Missouri and Mississippi (I live in Minnesota) and we braved the unbelievably cold weather (it's currently -25F/-32C) and went to an IKEA because Mom had never seen one. And I found this, and bought it on the spot:
Jansjo Gooseneck Table Lamp
It's not the prettiest lamp, but it's function is excellent. It's got one of those super LEDs in it, and it's very, very bright. The closer the light, it's more concentrated and brighter, the farther away, the more diffuse the light. Perfect. It's a bit cold in color, but it's decent in accuracy. It's not cheap, but it's wildly cheaper than OTT lamps (this one was $40).
They also have other versions of the light. A wall lamp, and a floor lamp as well:
Other Jansjo lights
Anyway, you can't order it off the internet, but it's available in stores. If you have an IKEA near you you might want to pick one up. ------ My (mostly) green sewing blog: http://NapkinLady.blogspot.com/ |

Date: 1/16/09 11:34 AM And I love the Bendable light that sticks to the side of the sewing machine or serger -- it's LED too. It is terrific for ripping out black stitching on black fabric which has to be the acid test! ------ Patti

Date: 2/11/09 7:32 PM Thank you!!! I have a gooseneck type lamp rihgt now that I move from my sewing room (aka dining room) table, to the breakfast room table with the regularity of the tides. Sewing table in the morning where I can pivot it between two machines, and then back to the breakfast room table nightly where I work with my daughter on her pre-AP precalculus nightly. Without extra light, I just cannot see properly and I get quite vexed at straining to make out the print in the textbook, or to see where my needle is entering the fabric, or the thread is entering the needle.
I NEED another lamp. My husband had read about Ott lights, and to read their advertisements, they are wonderful, but the reviews were not so great, especially when you factor in the cost.
So, this lamp looks like it might be able to stop the tidal movement of the gooseneck lamp at Chez Renren.
And the idea of IKEA appeals to me, having never yet gone. |

Date: 2/11/09 9:38 PM Patti B -- please elaborate on the bendable lamp that one attaches to the machine. I, too, am unable to get the light where I need it. Thanks! ------ Jan B. |

See my review of the bendable light under notions. I am not awake enough to post a link. I bought it at Nancy's Notions.
I agree with Patti B. (Are we all related?)
