i just finished sewing a skirt made from a vintage tablecloth. i made pattern marks with a black chalk pencil. And, of course, I can't get them out. I washed the skirt with a bit of oxy and detergent on cold because i was afraid hot would set the stain.

i am not letting it soak in color safe bleach. they have faded, but are clearly visible.
about.com says to rub alcohol on chalk marks-but i presume that that means white school chalk. aaagggghhhhh!

HELP ME!

Do you have scraps left over? Use them to experiment on. I would try the rubbing alcohol, and also gently rubbing liquid detergent on to the stain before washing in hot water. Try it on the scraps first. I have had trouble with chalk marks, but find that they come out after a few washings.

I've done this myself. Here's a post on my blog about it. Essentially, boiling water, a scrubber and soap.

I got that response from right here on PR!

I'd test methods on fabric scraps before using it on the garment.

I once got what looked like black chalk out with eye makeup remover. The mark was on the end of a fabric bolt so I've no idea what it was, but I thought hmm if the make up remover gets mascara out, maybe it'll work on this. And it did :-)
