ok, call me lazy (rather, my computer is lazy). But I really get bugged when I can't magnify/shrink people's pics on the gallery. Sometimes I just don't want to load the whole review page just to click on the pics from there.

I've noticed quite a few of the hardcore members now don't enable the magnify feature. Are they doing it just to pad their "times viewed" numbers?

ok. glad I got that out.
better now

If it won't magnify and I'm still interested, I will open the review page, but if the main image still will not enlarge there, I usually skip the review altogether. If the details cannot be seen, the review is much less meaningful to me.

I don't think any of my review photos are magnify/shrink-able. It never occurred to me that someone might have a problem with this. And I am certainly not trying to pad my times viewed count! It actually really bugs me when that number goes up and up, and I have no comments on the review.

The issue is that magnify/shrink only works when the link to your finished garment photo ends in .jpg or .gif (see Deepika's reply to this post: Gallery review). I use Picasa web albums, and the link I use is not a direct link to the photo but rather a link to the page in the album that contains the photo, so it doesn't end it .jpg or .gif. The nice thing about linking to the album is that you can page through and look at the other pictures right away if you want, without looking for links I might insert in my review. I could get the direct link and put it in the photo field instead. That would allow the magnify/shrink feature, but it would be another step that I find kind of annoying. Also, the photo would no longer be connected to the album, so people wouldn't be able to page through and see other pictures of the garment without going back to my review. It's just a matter of personal preference, I think, rather than anyone doing anything "wrong."

Personally, I prefer not to use the magnify/shrink option when looking at reviews, even if I am just interested in the picture. Many times it takes a really long time to load, often longer than just clicking through to the review and clicking on the photo.

I'm sure that it could be any number of things: :)

-people don't realize that this feature is available
-people are used to linking pictures and don't use upload
-people have issues with downloading/uploading pictures.

Not everybody uses the features available here in the same way.

I doubt that there is an underlying motivation for those who don't use the magnify feature. It's hard to imagine that somebody would do that just to boost their review. Is there actually a benefit to the number of views on a review that I'm not aware of?

I don't think there's any benefit to having the review "views" number increase - unless people who then visit your review then comment on and rate your review.

I'm aware that the feature exists, but I still couldn't make it work for my last review, despite following the instructions to the letter (or so I thought), and also posting about my problem in "Computers...Arrrrgh."

I haven't noticed "hardcore" members shunning it...lol.

I use Picasa as well and it took me awhile to figure out linking to an image rather than to the page or the album. If you are interested, just right click ON the photo, Click Copy image location and paste that into the link box. These links end in .jpg so that they will show up. HTH

Thanks - I thought right clicking didn't work when I had tried it a while ago so I had to do something a little more tricky to get the direct link to the image, but it seemed to work when I tried it just now! I must have been doing something weird, or maybe they changed the way it worked.

Anyway, I still like putting up links to the whole album better.

Actually, sorry, there is a benefit - if your review gets the highest number of views in any given week, that review would be featured on the PR home page as one of the rotating features (along with "most helpful PR member" and so on).

I am pretty computer savvy and I find writing and posting reviews here to be labor intensive. The process takes numerous steps and even more steps if one writes a lengthy, photo filled or linked review. As much as I love this site, I find the software functioning to be quirky at times. So, if a thumbnail doesn't enlarge, or opens to another pic, or is sideways (like my last review!)...I just assume the writer/sewer did her best with the time allotted.

Now I'm going to chew on this for awhile!

A very good and reasonable attitude, I'd say! And certainly we all have different preferences about reviews and photos and all.
