Date: 2/24/09 10:16 PM Welcome to the brand new sewn hat contest!!
Hi my name is Nina and I am happy to annonce the start of this contest,
The Sewn Hat contest will run from March 1 to March 31, 2009. The goal of this contest is to encourage people to try making hats.
The hat must include some sewing (machine or hand is fine). No knitted or crocheted hats. Note: ornamentation can be knit or crocheted. Knit fabric can be used. Hair ornaments such as fascinators do not qualify as a hat for purposes of this contest. The hat must be for a person (not for a toy, animal, statue, ....)
Ornamentation can be sewn, glued, or attached in any other fashion. It is not included in the 'must include some sewing' requirement.
Multiple entries are allowed per contestant. Each entry must have it's own review.
The winners will be determined by vote. Voting will begin on April 2nd and end on April 11th. First Prize: An online class of the winner's choice (minus the kit). Second Prize: A Pattern of the winner's choice. Prizes sponsored by PatternReview.com
*Rules that apply to all contests:
Contests begin on the 1st of the month, and all reviews must be entered for submission by 11:59 PM Eastern Time on the last day of the month.
Unless otherwise stated in the rules, Patterns may be drafted, tweaked, and muslined before the contest date, but fabric for the pieces entered may not be laid out or cut till the start date of the contest. Fabric may be pretreated before the contest date.
Items intended for sale, or for which you were or will be paid to make, do not qualify for any contest, but items made for charity are welcome!
Unless otherwise stated in the rules, all reviews written for a contest entry must include a picture of the entry.

Date: 2/25/09 1:21 PM I'm excited to join in my first contest! I plan on making a bonnet for my daughter. I hope that a bonnet qualifies as a hat. I'm looking forward to challenge!

Date: 2/25/09 1:59 PM For inspiration, I would like to introduce you to Wildhagen's hats. The hats on this page are all sewn and they are extremely cool. As well as being warm! -- Edited on 2/25/09 2:00 PM -- |

Date: 2/25/09 2:18 PM Those are some really beautiful hats, Kay. Thanks for the inspiration!
I think I'd like to try this contest. At the very least, I'll be making a newsboy cap for my older daughter. And maybe Butterick 4366 for myself. I've had it in my pattern stash a while and this seems like a good time to finally give it a whirl.

Date: 2/26/09 9:59 PM What qualifies as a fascinator? My idea of one is a doohickey that's about the size of a bagel which attaches with a comb, with a shape ranging from feathers to those wedding 'teardrops' to skullcaps.
I've been checking out some vintage hat patterns, and among the ones I'm thinking about are 1-2 hats of the sort called calots (including a cute scalloped one) - they are shaped to the head, bigger but not merely "attached" like a fascinator. Kinda like a brimless beanie, actually... maybe they ARE beanies, of another name. LOL. SO, just making sure, are beanie-types ok?
