Date: 3/10/09 4:39 PM My husband needs some pants that would keep the wind out when shoveling snow. Are there any patterns for plus sized men?

Date: 3/10/09 10:43 PM I *think* KwikSew's mens patterns go up to at least 2xl. Plus, my experience has been that they do run pretty big to begin with. You might want to try Jalie, too. I don't know about the men's sizing, but the women's have a huge size range and they do specialize in active-type clothing.

Date: 3/11/09 1:22 AM I just briefly went to Islander's website and just pulled up one men's shirt pattern, but this one goes all the way to 4x, and I am sure if your dh is like mine, you might have to do some fitting after that so it looks good.
Here is the link.
As I said, there are other patterns as well and some really good reviews here on PR. I am too tired to go look, but someone recently has made their dh really cool shirts. I need to do that for my huney as well. ------ "Sewing should be fun; make it that way!" Margaret Islander

Date: 3/11/09 3:15 PM Islander patterns seem to ONLY have large sized shirts for men - right now he needs some pants for shoveling snow next year. Hopefully, there will NOT be too much more snow - sometimes it can even snow in May, although that is very late.

Date: 3/11/09 4:11 PM Other than the Islander patterns, Simplicity has a single big-and-tall men's shirt pattern:

As far as pants go, I agree with Eve that the Kwik Sew men's patterns are pretty roomy. You didn't specify how "plus" your husband is, but the Kwik Sew XXL might fit, or at least might not need much added to the waist for them to fit.

Date: 8/26/12 3:17 PM If he has an old pair that he likes, you could take them apart and use them as pattern pieces for new pants. The trick here will not be the pattern (because cutting clothes apart isn't too hard, it's just tedious, and don't forget to add your seam allowance) but finding the right fabric. It sounds like you want a waterproof, breathable fabric, and enough for a plus size husband.
I googled it, and came up with this nice selection:

Date: 8/26/12 3:49 PM I don't know what size your hubby is but simplicity, butterick and mccalls all have elastic waist pull on pants for men in the sleepwear and activewear sections. My brother loves nylon pants for snow shoveling and grass cutting. He wears fleece/ sweats or shorts under them.
If you want a fly front zip pant, can't help on that one.
If your local zellers hasn't closed yet, they have nylon pants (some even lined) on super cheap ($4 here) and walmart has them for $12 - $17. |
