"MY Pattern" Rules

Managed By: Marie-Claude

Contest Rules

Objective: A finished garment made from the participant's own design and/or original pattern.

Definitions:

"Block": In this context a block is defined as a basic pattern which fits the individual. A block (or sometimes called a "sloper") does not have any design elements.

"Pattern": In this context a pattern is a derivative of the block or draping process used to create the final garment, or is the result of original drawing if a block or draping is not used.

"Draping": In this context draping is the art of manipulating fabric on an individual or a dressform to achieve the desired garment. A draped garment may or may not originate from a block and it may or may not result in a paper pattern.

Rules:

1. All members of Pattern Review may participate in the contest.

2. This contest will run from May 1st, 2009 to June 30th, 2009.

3. Blocks can be pre-existing and can be from any source, including a commercial fitting shell (eg. such as McCall's 2718) and blocks generated from pattern software. See limitations on pattern software below.

4. If a pattern is used, the pattern must be entirely the participant's own creation. Pattern can be derived from a previously created block (see definition above). Pattern should not have been copied or morphed from a commercial or someone else's pattern. Even if you are inspired by some designer's design, you have to still create your version of it. All cutting and sewing and pattern creation (or draping) will be done within the two months the contest is running.

5. Pattern can be created by any method - such as measurements, draping, flat patternmaking, or Computer Aided Design. If using a computer to draft, CAD computer programs are allowed only as a manual drawing tool and as a subtitute for pencil and paper. Shortcuts to add seam allowances, markers or rotate darts, for example, are allowed but no programmed (via macros or program options) or non-original pattern pieces or design/style elements are allowed. Please ask the contest manager if you are not sure if your process will be allowed.

6. One entry per person. An "entry" may be one garment or a coordinated outfit.

7. A WIP (work in progress) review should be started for each entry (either public or private) documenting the entire process, including photographs of the block (if used), the draping in process (if draping), and the finished pattern pieces (if pattern pieces were created). I understand that you'd rather spend time designing and sewing, but the documentation will be educational for all and will also help us decide who the winner is. Plus it's a good journal entry for you too.

8. When the garment(s) is/are complete, three clear photographs (front, back, side) of each completed garment in the entry should be added to the review. Photographs should either be on the person for whom the garment is designed or the dressform.

9. Winners will be deteremined by reader votes.

*Rules that apply to all contests:

Contests begin on the 1st of the month, and all reviews must be entered for submission by 11:59 PM Eastern Time on the last day of the month.

Fabric may be pretreated before the contest date.

Items intended for sale, or for which you were or will be paid to make, do not qualify for any contest, but items made for charity are welcome!

Unless otherwise stated in the rules, all reviews written for a contest entry must include a picture of the entry.

* Contest Eligibility
Any member of Pattern Review, either paying (FoPR) or non-paying, who's been a registered member on the site for 90 days prior to the start of a contest is eligible to enter. Any member of Pattern Review, either paying (FoPR) or non-paying, who's been a registered member on the site for 90 days prior to the end of a contest is eligible to vote in a contest. Any member who's won a prize (1st or 2nd place) in a contest on Pattern Review ended in the previous six months is ineligible to win another contest for a period of 6 months.

A Sidenote: All of the contests on PR are based on the honor system. It's hard to judge an entry for fitting because it all depends on how good the photograph is. And yet, since we all strive to achieve the best fit we can with each of our projects, it's important to remember that if you follow the rules and be true to yourself, you are the winner, no matter what.

Here it is, the official thead for the MY PATTERN contest. It's my first time managing a contest so please be kind ;-)

I can't wait to see everybody's creations! I know there are extremely talented PR users out there, so this contest should be a treat for the eye.

Have fun!

Edited to remove comment about one month vs two - it's now two months, hurray!

I think I'm in. Not as many ideas this year, alas, as last year.

Suo ergo maledicto

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary. - Steve Jobs

You're right about that, I will correct the text. I just copied and pasted the rules that were supplied to me without giving it a second look!

You know, you can never proof-read your own work. None of us committee members noticed the month typo. Thank you and let us know if you find any other glitches in the rules.

SexiSadi - We don't know what the prize will be. Where Deepika was gone most of April, she hasn't had the opportunity to announce it to us.

So just to clarify, is it one month or two? I'm still confused. One month is extremely short for such a big project. Last year we had one month to draft and perfect the muslin, then one month to sew.

Thanks for the clarification. I'll pass then. It simply isn't enough time for me, but I'll watch from the sidelines with interest.

Since I missed the contest last year, I too was hoping to participate this year. But like you, Belinda, one month won't be long enough for me, as I can only work on weekends and very odd hours here-and-there. But I too will be watching other peoples' magic. --Lily
