Date: 5/7/09 5:14 PM Urgent Help! I am attending a ball next week Saturday and it's my wedding anniversary and I have actually made myself a dress. For events like this I usually buy something but I thought I'd try and put my skills/hobby to use. I made Vogue V2810 View C (skirt) and Vogue V2237 for the Top. I'm using a satin fabric. It's all sewn up and I've just inserted the invisible zip and when I try the dress on the zipper has a couple of waves in it, which looks unsightly. You cannot see this when the dress if off my body. Please help.....How can I correct this? In hindsight it would have been better if I had placed the zipper on the side....well I guess you learn from your mistakes...and I've made many!!! Thanks :)

What did you make these out of? Depending on the fabric, uou might end up making things worse by unpicking the zipper and trying to re-sew it!
Do you have pictures of the exact problem you're having? It's to diagnose the cause of anything without pictures, especially something as vague as an "unslightly slightly wavy zipper". :) ------ Becca

Date: 5/7/09 6:44 PM Did you use fusible interfacing along the seam where the zip is inserted? I skipped this vital (to me) step recently and had to unpick the zip, apply the fusible and redo the zip. Then it was beautiful! If you haven't done this before (skip this if you have), cut 1 inch wide strips of a lightweight fusible and apply to the zipper seam area before you insert the zip. It gently stabilizes it and, usually, no ripples. HTH ------ Patti

Date: 5/7/09 8:49 PM Thanks for posting the links to the patterns. I tried to link the pattern pictures from voguepatterns.com but I must be doing something wrong!! Typical!!! I'll post a picture tomorrow as it's 1.44am in the morning (in the UK) and my husband won't be to pleased with me waking him up to take pictures. I'll try and nab him before he goes off to work tomorrow and post some pictures. I'm using a satin fabric which I have been very careful with as it's not very forgiving if you unpick it. |

Date: 5/7/09 9:07 PM Thanks for replying Patti, I'm using a satin fabric. The fabric itself is not wavy it lies smoothly where I've inserted the zipper, but when the dress is on my body the zip has a wave from around my waist to my bum. I thought of shortening the zip but I'm not sure if that would solve the problem. Applying lightweight fusible to my zipper seam will that be OK with my satin fabric? I'm a little apprehensive as satin can be unforgiving if unpicked. I love sewing but sometimes it can be a little frustrating.......arggggggghhh. |

Date: 5/7/09 11:29 PM Sound like you stretched the fabric a little. Open the area up where you have the wave's and resew the zipper in. First do a stay stitch and slightly gather it. This should shorten the fabric a little it should lay straight. Good luck and let us know how it turn out. ------ Galatians 5:22-23 The Spirit produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humility, and self-control. Date: 5/7/09 11:36 PM Would putting some sort of stiffener on the zipper tape help? Boning? Horsehair braid?
Is the hip area being pulled crosswise by being too narrow?
I think I'd try a few things before ripping out satin... ------ blog: goodworks1.wordpress.com

Date: 5/8/09 5:01 AM Thanks....everyone has been so helpful. I've learnt alot! 1. Think about zipper positioning before sewing up your garment 2. staystich zipper seam 3. stabilise zipper seam. I think I'll invest in a book on sewing formal garments the books I have are targetted towards complete beginners. My 8 month old has gone to sleep...so I'm going to start unpicking (very carefully!!). Staystich and stabilise and I'll e-mail you back to say how I got on. I could not post a picture of the dress as my husband was running late for work. I'll try this evening. Thanks again everyone much appreciated :) |

Date: 5/9/09 6:23 PM Hi everyone, I've got the kinks out. I took everyone's advice on board. I unpicked the effected area and placed 1 inch fusible interfacing down the seam. I shortened the zip (alot). I have to put the dress over my head in order to get it on. It's not a perfect solution but it's a fix. Thanks everyone for your help. I have learnt a lot the hard way...but I guess I won't make the same mistake again. I'm just attaching the lining to the zipper and I have the hem to do and then I can make a start on my shrug. I hope I finish in time! |
