Date: 5/9/09 7:19 PM Are you ready for some GREAT news? There is a going to be a PatternReview BOOK! Yes, that's right guys. We are going to be in PRINT! Our very own PatternReview book.
Here's some background. Last year I was contacted by a publisher with an idea to write a book. After months of pondering and then hours of brainstorming, we came up with what we think is going to be a "ROCKING" book. How many of us read pattern directions in bed? Well after this book is published we'll be able to read PR in bed too!
About the Book
-----------------
The book, tentatively titled "Best of PatternReview.com: Favorite Shortcuts and Tips from Sewing Fans and Master Teachers" will be a collection of some of the best hands-on insider sewing tips from PatternReview.com. The book will be organized into chapters that reflect the different stages of the sewing experience — from planning and organizing to sewing on the final button and bead.
Master Teachers
-------------------
It will also include five special how-to features by PatternReview.com's master teachers and pattern designers, who regularly conduct online chats and workshops -- Kenneth King, Susan Khalje, Sarah Veblen, Shannon Gifford, and Anna Mazur. I am honored to have tips from our members and articles from these teachers be a part of this book.
Not-For-Profit
---------------
I must also mention that this will be a not-for-profit project for me and I intend to donate any royalties - a very small percentage of the wholesale price of books sold AFTER 7,500 copies are sold - to a charity (to be picked later). The entire signing bonus I receive from the publisher will be distributed to the members whose tips will be published in this book. This project is a significant undertaking and it will take months of effort to pull the book together however this will be worth it and TOTALLY AWESOME!
Contributors
------------
The editor and I have gone through all the tips submitted to PatternReview.com and have selected the ones which fit with the vision of the book. In reading the tips I was just amazed by the talent here on PR and I cannot wait to see your names in PRINT. That is, only IF YOU WANT! We have selected quite a few tips and at this point all the selected contributors have been e-mailed. So please take a minute and check your e-mail and your private messages here on PR. Also check your spam/bulk mail folder just to make sure that it didn't get stuck there. The deadline for responding is May 18th so if you were notified and you want your tip(s) in the book, please do respond by May 18th.
I must re-iterate that without your approval we will not publish your tips in the book.
The more I think about it, the more it's clear. This is a GOOD thing and YOU can help make it HAPPEN! Lets celebrate this milestone together!
A TOAST.... TO ALL PatternReview Members. To the generosity and kindness of sewing members all around the world and Lastly to the friendships and bonds we have all formed right here on PatternReview!
Update April 10th, 2010
At this point all the contributors in the book have been informed that their tip has been chosen to be published in the book.
Not-For-Profit
--------------
This book is a not-for-profit project for me as an individual and I do not speak for the publisher or anyone else on this.
Further clarification
---------------------
I will distribute 100% of my author's fee - $5000 as an honorarium between all the contributors for the 1,000 tips which are being published in this book. So depending on how many of each contributor's tips are published in the book, they can expect to recieve $5/tip.
As of April 10th, 2010 I have received $1,000 from the publisher and I hope to receive the rest in the next two months.
In addition to the $5,000 mentioned above I will get a royalty for the book from them which kicks in after a certain number of copies are sold. Besides these funds I have not received any other kind of compensation from the publisher or anyone else for this project.
When the royalty checks come in, they will go in their entirety to National Breast Cancer Foundation. -- Edited on 4/10/10 8:02 PM -- ------ - Deepika

Date: 5/9/09 9:02 PM This is absolutely awesome, fantastic, and I will want one!! Now when I am away from my computer---say at a track meet like I was with my kids today, and I can sit and read all of Debbie Cook's tips while sitting in the bleachers---Yea!!! What a great idea!!!
The charity??? Someone has a blog that raises money for women in Africa to sew and become self sufficient. I think Sandra Betzina goes over to Africa to teach sewing every year as a charity effort. I can't remember who it was that was supporting this type of thing, but I think that would be a wonderful focused charity with purpose---just an idea Miss "D"! ------ "Sewing should be fun; make it that way!"
