I want to make at least my DD some cute board shorts to go over her bikini. I thought the name of the fabric that both guys and girls boardshorts were made of was SUPPLEX. But I can't seem to find it under that name. I hope everyone knows what I what I am talking about--the obviously synthetic possibly microfiber woven cloth that is not very thick, dries quickly and has a lot of drape to it.

I need to find some black and hopefully some other bright colors in small amouts for trims etc.
Can anyone help me figure out what to look for> It will most likely have to be an online purchase because the local fabric sources are BAD!

Check this link...Board shorts fabric content

I grew up land-locked, so anything water-oriented is totally foreign to me!

I just ordered some branded supplex from Seattle Fabrics, on line. I have bought a substitute version from them previously, and it is definitely board short type fabric, but the non branded fabric is a little more thin than RTW board shorts. Some colours were on sale too.

I've seen it tagged as microfiber. For example, check out this page, if you scroll down a little (the first fabrics are described as Taslan and Satin).

I have some Supplex from Wazoodle and it was most definitely called Supplex and it feels like boardshort material.

So, you aren't mistaken, though I'm sure the fabric goes under many names!

edited to add... the above link is a search for "supplex" on Wazoodle.com, however, I just realized that all the fabrics are Out of Stock! But you could email and ask if they'll be getting more. That is where I purchased mine!

Supplex and Taslan are trade names for Dupont nylon. Burlington also has a few trade names for their own fabrics. There are lots of woven water resistant nylons and polyesters that will work. Besides smooth, there are also are crinkle and brushed textures.
Read the descriptions closely, you don't want supplex knit by mistake.
Any online retailer of outdoor or sports fabrics will have what you're looking for.

I spent a really long time on this question recently, and then gave up trying to buy online :). I found some locally, and then a friend in hawaii is picking up some prints for me.

I agree with the above general conclusion, though, that it can be lots of different waterproof fabrics, and it just depends what you can get your hands on.

I just sewed my first pair this weekend...a KS pattern!

I'm pretty sure Supplex is nylon.

Rose City Textiles sells the remainders of actual RTW fabrics, and has over a hundred choices for supplex. Many of the items do not have images of the color, but I've found the descriptions to be accurate. They send swatches for free. Supplex is a brand name for nylon. Avoid any fabric that is DWR, which means it has a durable water-repellent finish on the outside. The only issue I had was with the amount of time it took for them to ship. I suggest finding out when they will be able to ship before you buy.
