Hello All

I was wondering if anyone could make some recommendations on fabric shops to browse while I do a whirlwind trip to NY to visit familythis weekend.  I figured those of you that went to the PR weekend in NY and shopped till you dropped could offer suggestions on must see places!  I probably will have about 4  hours to shop and wanted to make the most of it!!

I recently had the very same question, Chimene.  The lovely ladies of PR.com gave me some great advice in this thread.

You should definitely hit Spandex House, but do it last--all of that Lycra gets *heavy*!

Have great fun and be sure to give us all the details on your great finds.

I just came back from New York and let me give you a warning:  the addresses on the web sites for Moods and Spandex House are incorrect.  I luckily just stumbled onto Spandex House.  And from there they directed me to Mood.  I found M&J trim by seeing a woman walking around Mood with a shopping bag with an address.  I would call ahead and get addresses.  It's impossible to find these places unless you know where you are going.  My favorite was M&J.

Mood Fabrics is a must!  I also find some good bargains at Paron on 40th b/w 7th & 8th Ave.  The Annex is all half off but the regular store next door does have some fabrics half off as well.  I think you might find this helpful:  Taunton's Sewer's Guide to New York City.  The addresses seem to be up-to-date.  Have a great time!

Those address are NOT correct (as of last week when I went to NYC.)  The individual stores websites are also incorrect (they obviously do not update their sites frequently.)  Call the stores you want to visit and get a current address.  There is no way to find most of these stores unless you know where they are.

I forgot to recommend Daytona Trimmings at 251 W 38th St (b/w 7th & 8th).  I just called and checked and the Mood and Spandex House addresses are correct on the Taunton site.  I agree that it's good to call ahead.  Keep in mind that most of the fabric stores are between 7th and 8th Ave.   Oh, and this area is very convenient to the subway.  Good luck!

Chimene, if you get a chance, please post any new info on your NY trip and maybe even 'fess up to how much you spent!  I'm going to be up there in Sept. and am planning a whirlwind shopping trip also.  Last time I shopped in NY's garment district was in 1975.  I suspect things have changed since then.

Sorry it has taken me so long to post the results of my trip 2 weeks ago.  I was salivating when I got there!  I bought as much fabric that would fit into my suitcase and I did not get to all of the shops everyone recommended!  I hit a lot of the smaller shops on  8th avenue and bought linen at $4 yd; some nice cotton pique  for the same price.  Parron annex is a must see!  I got some really nice fancy knits for 5-6$/yd.  There is a really nice trims shop on the same block as spandex house - sorry I don't remember the name but it was up the street on the opposite side of spandex.  I did make it to Spandex house but it was my last stop and I ran out of time and only could do the first floor and I bought several different fabrics with colorful patterns for  swimsuits- I was so disappointed that I did not get up stairs to browse but I did not want to be late for the bridal shower! Plus my suitcase was heavy and difficult to manuever in the small shops once it was filled!!!!
I also bought some nice silk for lining at Manhattan fabrics on 8th ave.
I did browse B&J they had such a large selection I got overwhelmed!  Next time I will bring patterns/project ideas  with me!!

In total I spent $100 on approx 25 yards of fabric.

I can't wait to return. Now I know that I must dedicate at least 2 days to shop.  There were so many stores that I did not get to.  I really felt my addiction to fabric and it surprised me!  I recommend bringing cash so that you can bargain and so that you set a limit on what you spend if you don't watch out you could really go overboard!!
