My new Brother 1034D should arrive tomorrow from Walmart. So, I went ahead and order The Complete Serger Handbook. I have skimmed a few pages to prep myself for tomorrow, I noticed on page 91, the author says to watch the needle or the the mark on the presser foot.

When I read the preview pages (pg. 33) of The New Sewing with a Serger (Singer) on Amazon, they say to watch the knives.

What do you do? What is best? Is it an individual's preference?

OT & possible regret: Maybe I should have bought the The New Sewing with a Serger book instead....

I watch the raw edge/seam guide when sewing in straight lines. I watch the presser foot/needle when sewing around curves where the gap between knives and needle can be problematic.

I watch the raw edge and fabric approaching the blade.

How is that still a thing?

I watch the raw edge and knife so I cut off an even amount.

I also keep an eye on the needle to make sure I am not pulling the fabric to the left.

I also watch the raw edge to keep the seam allowance even. I line it up with a landmark on my machine depending on how much I want to cut off.

Hum, so everyone watches the raw edge. That helps out a lot.

Thanks!

I watch the raw edges too.

A lesson/cautionary note: I had an accident in my earlier serging days, when I was working on a garment and didn't make sure my fabric was laid out flat and chopped off a piece of the second layer as it quickly went across the knife. I ended up with a big hole in the back waist. Be attentive and speed up when you get comfortable... and make sure your fabric is where it's supposed to be!

Have fun with your new toy, I'm looking at the same model on Ebay!

I don't use my serger to construct garments only to finish the edges of seam allowances. I never watch the raw edge. Instead, I line the sewing machine stitched seam up with a landmark on my presser foot and watch that.

I don't look at the raw edge - I look somewhere around the needle. If I have marked the stitching line, I watch to make sure that lines up with the needle.
