Date: 7/19/09 4:04 AM I've decided to take the plunge; I'm signing up to attend the 2010 Academy in Williamsburg, VA next February.
I've always admired Baltimore Album quilts and would like to at least try my hand at it. On the other hand, tho, I'm NOT a big fan of applique, so there's no guarantee I'll like it better after the classes. But I do tend to need to see techniques done--I'm a visual learner--so I want to do this at least once. Then, if I really don't enjoy it, well--I gave it an honest shot. And if I do? Well....LOL, then I'm screwed because, talk about another time hogging hobby!
Anyway, I thought I'd ask the folks here if they've ever done an album quilt or taken the classes and what they thought. |

Date: 7/19/09 10:18 AM I have always wanted to go, but it is right after another event I always attend (Martha Pullen), so I've never been able to. I have a friend that has gone for years and absolutely loves it. You might want to take a local applique class to find out if you think you will like it. In the past Elly's Academy has filled up very quickly, and had a waiting list, so you may need to decide soon. I love it - very relaxing and portable. I am attending AQS in Knoxville this week and am taking a workshop with Becky Goldsmith on hand applique. |

Date: 7/19/09 10:32 AM Well, I can't mail in the forms before August 17, so I've got a bit of leeway on mailing in the registration. But I live within driving distance of Williamsburg, and I *love* Williamsburg, so worst case scenario isn't so bad. And if I don't get in, well... LOL, I'll worry about that then :)
But thanks for responding. It's good to know that someone knows someone who's been :) |

Date: 7/19/09 12:55 PM Hmmm...excuse to go to Williamsburg = excuse to go to Richmond = excuse to go home and see my mommy. =) I will definitely think about it! You can carry a sewing machine on a plane, right? ------ "To love another person is to see the face of God!" ~Les Miserables

Date: 7/26/09 7:55 PM I've had the pleasure of taking a guild workshop Hand Applique Class from Elly - many years ago. I enjoyed the class and leaning her techniques BUT my two Baltimore Samples from the class are still in the plastic bag! They are perfect examples from the book - BALTIMORE BEAUTIES & BEYOND 1989 that's when I took the class! Although I am in awe of beautifully executed Baltimore Album Quilts - there is no way in my lifetime I will have the time or patience required. I have done many hand applique projects that I have completed... The most gratifying one was an applique of my son's CAT - from a workshop by Nancy Brown. My girlfriend signed me up for yet another 'hand applique workshop' not knowing the subject was a CAT! As luck would have it, my son had just accquired a baby cat. I took a photo of it, as required for the class and attended the workshop. It took me a year but I finished it, quilted it and gave it to my son..... I was most impressed and the entire piece was needle turn applique. It makes a difference when you do something with a friend.....

Date: 8/14/09 11:43 AM I have gone for the past five years, and have loved every minute of it. But then I love to hand applique! There is a machine applique class, and a friend has had the teacher, and enjoyed it very much. It is a very well organized event, with lots of quilts to see, and everyone is very friendly and encouraging. It is just about the highpoint of my year, and I have made some very good friends there, so I do encourage anyone interested to go. Mary |
