Hello, worldly fabric enthusiasts. I may get to go to Haarlem and Leiden for a few days at the end of August on business but will have a bit of time to spare. Any tips, hints, or shopping for sewing/fabric related items to recommend?

Many thanks in advance!

You can look for Knipmode at the newsstands. If you're taking a train anywhere there is usually a large newsstand in the train station that will have them. Also, you might have good luck finding Onion patterns. Onion is a Danish pattern company but I've found them at some fabric stores and markets in The Netherlands. (If you're unfamiliar with them the English site is www.shoponion.com).

Have fun on your trip!

Thank you Jatman for the ideas about pattern magazines. Hadn't thought of that! And thank you Els for the fabric store links. Isn't it interesting about the state of fabric stores in Leiden? I had been reading about how important fabrics had been to the historic economy of the city in earlier centuries and thought maybe the influence of the fabric industry had persisted somehow.

There are fabric markets in the Netherlands which I believe are a bit of an institution. Here is a site for general market information or Els might be able to help with a site specifically for fabric markets. If you are lucky there may be a fabric market on in the towns you are visiting while you are there.

I second the market info. There is a Friday Market in Maastricht that always has fabric although it is not listed in the description. It. Is. Awesome. Not sure how much getting around you're going to do while you're there. I don't think you're going to be terribly far from Maastricht and if you don't have a car the train will get you there. It's one of my favorite cities on the face of the Earth.

Also, there are travelling fabric markets but they don't have their fall schedules up yet. Here's the one that seems to have the most markets in The Netherlands:

I've gone to a few of these and they are pretty cool, too!

Thanks so much for the market information. I have 2 appointments in Leiden on Friday so Maastricht is not in the cards on that day--but just being in the Leiden and visiting Haarlem and the fabric shops there will be lots of fun. The information about the other markets is very helpful--perhaps over the weekend...
Thanks again
