We need to replace a laptop. Does anyone have any suggestions? I know that back-to-school sales are starting but I'm not sure what is the best choice under $900. What brands do you like at this price? We mostly use computers for internet searching, some video (online) and photos. We will probably not need a lot of room for pics as I am going to start saving those on external drives and online. TIA!

I got mine for less than $400 about 3 years ago on delloutlet.com so I haven't priced for a while. The kids use it to play online.

DH supplies laptops to small business and I notice almost all of them are Acers, which is what I have, as well. He gets them with Windows XP, most assuredly not Vista (don't get him started on Vista runs away screaming). I don't have the foggiest notion about cost, though. Have fun shopping!

I think it depends on what size you want. I mean, do you want a lightweight, easily transported laptop or are you more or less using it as a substitute for a desktop.

We got my parent's a nice Toshiba with a 17" screen (easier to read with older eyes) for around $500. It had XP Pro, but probably isn't something that would work well for gaming, etc.

IMHO, most anything you buy today will be fine for gaming, video, photos, etc. Just avoid Vista.

Honestly, I am right now on a 10 year old Dell computer that has only 93 Mb RAM and it runs several applications at the same time like Photoshop, DreamWeaver, multiple instances of Explorer, etc. It is running Windows 98 which isn't a bloated OpSys whereas my other computers are hands down bigger, faster, better but run Windows XP. It just makes steam come out my ears when I think about the $3000 I paid for this 98 machine compared to the $350 I paid for the XP laptop my son is playing Runescape on right now. But, yeah, where was I going with this? Oh... You can do pretty much anything you need to do with the kind of RAM and processors that are on the market these days and for a reasonable price.

If you get a new HP or Dell running VISTA you should be fine unless you use some program that isn't going to run on VISTA. It is too bad you couldn't wait until they are going to come with a FREE upgrade to Windows 7, but already some vendors seem to be saying they will do that - so shop around. Try DELL online, and then shop at Staples, Best Buy etc. Get yourself the most for the least! My daughter has a DELL laptop and VISTA Home Basic and she isn't having any problems - had it for 8 months now. We sort of plan on an upgrade to Win7 later on.

Do you work in a school? Are you a college student? Are you a PTA officer or school board member? You would have to check eligibility requirements, but Apple offers some very attractive deals. Often they are around the time that school begins and that is next week where I live. Check out their Store for Education. When I looked they had a Macbook for $949, MacBook Pro for $1,099, and an iMac for $1,149. I am not affiliated with Apple in any way, but I have always had Apple products -- going back to the old Apple IIe. The first two I mentioned are laptops. One year they ran some deals where you got an iPod Touch with your computer purchase. (I didn't check prices except for the education ones. They aren't usually too much more I don't think.)

Are there any Sales Tax Holidays coming up in your state? Next weekend will be the tax holiday here. There is a list of eligible products and clothing and some of computers qualify. We have high sales taxes so it makes quite a difference. I believe the tax holiday deal works whether you buy online or in a store.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. Both DH and I are taking college courses and I am a public school teacher. So I may be able to get a percentage off...usually 5-12% it seems. We don't do any gaming so that isn't an issue. I tried to purchase a Dell online but they wouldn't accept my check card. I think they wanted me to use their credit card and I wasn't about to. I've not heard good things about Vista so I would rather have XP if we stay with PCs. I'm intrigued by the Macs. I will have to go try one out, maybe. Thanks again! Wish me luck!

We just purchased a nice Toshiba Satellite at Best Buy for under $700. This will be our fourth Toshiba Satellite laptop and all of them are still running strong. Between me, my husband and the kids they are used on a daily basis for everything between gaming (WOW), business, college, internet, you name it. Everyone has been very happy with theirs which is important when kids are away at college with them. So far my Satellite (3 years old) has outlived my co-worker's Sony and my boss's Dell laptops. As for VISTA, almost all are selling with this system but I know that Best Buy is offering free upgrades to the new operating system when it comes out if you purchase from them. Our latest laptop was under $700.

Someone who is retired after many years in a responsible position in the technology department of a school system mentioned to me that he has no problem personally with buying "refurbished" computers as they come with the same one year warranty. I haven't tried that myself but would consider it. Another interesting site for anyone thinking of a Mac is http://www.smalldog.com
