memory up/down needle position? I'm trying to plan ahead for Xmas and want to buy my two daughter's their first machines. they are both 8yo. They've used to sewing on my Janome Magnolia. But we've had to borrow a machine for the last few weeks, my sister's old Singer, which is built like a tank, and they've adjusted well but we are all having a problem without that feature. We got so used ot it on the Janome that it's really the only thing that I really miss. I'd like to get them something that has that feature and since I have to buy two, it can't be too expensive. Thanks. Rita

My Bernina's both have the memory switch for needle up/down and the needle can be changed from up to down (or the other way) by steping on the back of the foot pedal.

Rita,
I believe all the Bernina's from the Activa line on up have the needle up/down button. The Activa's are nice little machines. I had 2 on loan from my dealer a few years ago when I was teaching sewing to two 4th graders. They loved the machines. One mom ended up buying the machine.

I would go to the janome dealer. They have lots of new machines that have the up and down feature. here is the jem style 760jem 760 they also have the jem 720jem 720
these machine are smaller insize and are great for little beginners. heres another one from ebay price is under 400.00janome free shipping ebay has a lot of sewing machines. check out your local janome dealer first and look at the machines. Have your girls try them out and see which one they like. Have fun shopping!

The Kenmore 16231 has the needle up/down feature and can be had for $199 on sale. It also has speed control which might be a good thing for 8 year olds.

Yes, you should buy a $2000 Bernina. Your lil' 8-year-olds will love it! ROTFL.

I agree with jtrl4's recommendation. The 16231 at $199 is the most bang for your buck with needle up/down and bonus of speed control. It is sturdy, full-sized and well-reviewed here. I am not sure how long this model will be available. Maybe someone else knows if this a clearanced model or regular stock at regular price.

The Kenmore and others are still available on Overstock.com for a little less. It is shown as the Janome 11590:

There are several members who have bought these refurbished models with happy results. What a great gift for your girls!
