I need some advice about buying a machine.

I am considering buying and Elna Air Electronic. I have always had good luck with Elnas so I decided that I wanted to buy a newer older Elna. I was looking on craigslist and found two that I like. I talked to both sellers and the machines are running perfectly and are in good condition. Both had detailed pictures.

But the dilema is I don't know if I should buy the Air Electronic Duplex or the Carina. Both however do not come with the wrap around cover... (I figure I can get that at another time). And neither come with cams but I figure I can purchase accessories at another time, I am mainly focused on the machine itself.... however the Carina comes with the darning/stippling foot.

I was hoping some Elna owners could point me in the right direction because I have always wanted to buy an Air Electronic.

I don't know if I should buy the Air Electronic Duplex or the Carina.

I have an Elna Air Electronic SU 69 purchased in 1980. It is a fabulous machine. It is so quiet, smooth running, easy to use, fabulous stitches. There were several books written just for the use of this machine. Mine is a duplex meaning that it pops up for the free arm function. I believe the Carina is similar, a newer model. Not sure what the differences are.

Let us know what you decide. Bet you will get a terrific buy getting it on Craigslist. Even on Ebay these machines go for prices less than the quality of the machine would seem to warrant. They have not achieved the legendary status of the Pfaff 1222s or the Bernina 930s. But they are truly worthy of that status.

Thanks for your encouragement on buying this machine. Do you keep your Duplex in a cabinet or do you have a cover for it and use it without the cabinet?

Mine is in a cabinet from the Elna company so it is flat level with the sewing surface unless I need to elevate it for the free arm. I got the wrap around cover for it a few years later because I was taking it to classes. I don't think it was really made for this machine though, but it fits on it.

I guess that mine sits down in a cabinet and has the free arm. It came from grandma with the cabinet (made by grandpa) so I have always thought of the two together. Even though it is recessed I have never had a problem using the free arm.

Also, I couldn't find that wrap around cover to save my life right now, but it has come in quite handy in the past. I have always taken the convenience for granted, I can't imagine having to get one of those big, bulky carrying cases. I love the fact that my necessary tools fit inside the cover for transport.

Does yours have the button to press so that the machines lifts up in position for free arm sewing? Unless I press that button my machine has wood around it so that I have no access to the free arm. Your granddad must have done a special design!

It doesn't actaully lift up, it slides out in front so that you can have access to the space underneath it. This is quite handy for shirt cuffs. Grandma and grandpa owned an antique shop, and grandpa reuilt/restored antique furniture. We still have several pieces that he made, so he was quite talented.
