Date: 8/16/09 9:08 PM What's the smallest machine that has speed control? I just received the much anticipated Juki F600 which has speed control and some other options that I think would be great for teaching beginners. Of course I don’t want them to use my brand new baby, so I’m looking for a smaller machine which I can use for travel when I’m not teaching sewing. Any suggestions? |

Date: 8/17/09 12:16 PM I would suggest the Janome Platinum Jem 760. Nice lightweight machine with speed control slide. Lots of stitches. Affordable accessories. ------ Carol - * I always have more time to sew *

Date: 8/17/09 12:47 PM If it didn't have to be really small, I have a Husqvarna Emerald 122 that I take to sewing class. Its not heavy, has speed control and needle up/down button, also I like the fact that its easy to use for a beginner, just turn the dials to select your stitch and you can also tap your heel on the foot control to make the needle go down.
Mine lives in a sewing machine tote bag on wheels and I don't need to take the hard cover with me. I have room in there for a load of fabric and sewing bits.
Also I like that the machine has a larger work area than the Jem, takes all Janome feet and bobbins too (I use Janome darning foot for free motion work on it).

Date: 8/17/09 1:00 PM I use my Kenmore 16231 for classes or when I get together with friends. It has speed control and a great handle-although I put it in a wheeled cart-and it is not very heavy. The Kenmore also has a great price. ------ Viking Husqvarna 870Q, Kenmore 16231, Babylock Imagine Wave and Coverstitch, Janome 350E |

Date: 8/17/09 3:42 PM The Brother SE-350 is compact, has speed control and an auto thread trimmer, plus the ability to do embroidery(4x4) if you want. I saw one on clearance at WalMart yesterday for $330 but they are selling on eBay from a reputable dealer for about $250.
I have the Project Runway version and it sews great! My 8 y.o. loves it. -- Edited on 8/17/09 3:43 PM -- |
