Subject: Costume Contest 2009 - Official Discussion Date: 9/24/09 2:04 PM Welcome to the official thread for the Contest Costume. The contest itself will be open in a few days, but in the meantime I am sure you would all love to see the rules.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Costume Contest
Get all dressed up - - - in a costume.
- Contest will begin Oct. 1 and run until Oct 31st. Items sewn prior to Oct. 1st cannot be entered into the contest
- Costumes do not have to be only Halloween costumes. Any costume can be entered.
- All sewing must be during October. Patterns may be previous used or first time patterns.
- You can enter as many items as you want in the contest.
- Pet costumes are also included.
- A review is required for each item which is entered in the contest. (If the item is made from the same pattern you've reviewed once, you can update that review and enter it into the contest.)
The winner will be determined by member votes.
Voting begins Nov. 2nd and ends Nov. 10th.
Suggested voting (and sewing) considerations:
- How is the quality of construction (compared to the entrant's skill level)?
- Does the fabric selected work well with the costume style?
- If it's an historical costume, is it similar to original?
- If it's a pet costume, is it comfortable for the pet?
- Is this a particularly creative costume?
- Is this idea useable by others?
*Rules that apply to all contests:
1. Contests begin on the 1st of the month, and all reviews must be entered for submission by midnight Eastern Time on the last day of the month.
2. Unless otherwise stated in the rules, Patterns may be drafted, tweaked, and muslined before the contest date, but fabric for the pieces entered may not be laid out or cut till the start date of the contest. Fabric may be pretreated before the contest date.
3. Items intended for sale, or for which you were or will be paid to make, do not qualify for any contest, but items made for charity are welcome!
4. Unless otherwise stated in the rules, all reviews written for a contest entry must include a picture of the entry.
Contest Eligibility
1. Any member of Pattern Review, either paying (FoPR) or non-paying, who's been a registered member on the site for 90 days prior to the start of a contest is eligible to enter.
2. Any member of Pattern Review, either paying (FoPR) or non-paying, who's been a registered member on the site for 90 days prior to the end of a contest is eligible to vote in a contest.
3. Any member who's won a prize (1st or 2nd place) in a contest on Pattern Review ended in the previous six months is ineligible to win another contest for a period of 6 months.

Date: 9/24/09 2:59 PM I'm definitely in!
We're going to have a Halloween party at work and we need to 'dress to impress'. I'm going to turn myself into a pirate I've bought Simplicity 3677 and I will use this for main elements of the costume (shirt, pants, possibly corset). I also bought Simplicity 2627, which I'm planning to use for some elements (corset if I prefer this one, purse). I have enough fabric and trims in my stash, so this costume won't be too costly!!

Date: 9/26/09 7:32 PM I see the Costume thread has started! Looks like not everyone saw it yet; it's been quiet.
Marie-Claude - pants or skirt for your pirate gal?

Date: 9/26/09 7:44 PM Well...if I can get my act together...we will have: Alice, the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit, and the Queen of Hearts....now of course, the likelihood of this actually getting done is very slim, but hey, one can dream, right??

Date: 9/26/09 10:37 PM i've been looking for this contest; figured there would be one for halloween. anyway, i've promised 13yo son that i would make a joker costume for him. we are going to do it more like the comic book than the movie -- it's really hard to find those subtle colors that heath's joker wore. if i can, i hope to get a witch costume made for myself. i've had the fabrics for what...3-4 years? :) ------ Linda

Date: 9/27/09 12:25 PM Me, me! I'm making my 15yo boy into Sweeney Todd, and my 16yo daughter, whose friends are going as Rosie the Riveter and Mata Hari, has decided she wants to be the girl in the WWII poster who says "I wish I were a man so I could join the US Navy!" Sailor blouse and sailor cap, and we're going to do some Katharine Hepburn-style white wool trousers instead of bellbottoms. Soooo excited! I'm glad now that I haven't started cutting yet (I always get analysis paralysis just before I lay rotary cutter to fabric), cos I didn't know there was a costume contest this year. Next page>> |

Reply to AnneM Date: 9/27/09 1:09 PM Good one! I'm leaning towards 'pants' for now, like the gold-colored ones on the front picture of the pattern. ------ Surgeon General says: "Ten yards a day keeps the blues away."

Date: 9/27/09 3:02 PM Just got the costume "order" from 7.5 year old DGS -- he wants to be Harry Potter. When we last talked about costumes I told him he had to decide by October 1st as Granny has more costumes to make this year. Still waiting to hear back on the baby's costume.
