I have been working on a dress for my nephews wedding. I have really liked the way it has been coming a long and I have been pretty proud of my self for taking on this task as I have never put a zipper in or sewed any thing form fitting. I have only made knit tops and pants with elastic waists.

I put one sleeve in today and now I see after all of this that I need a dart. I guess it will be easy enough as sewed the side seams last. But now I don't feel like adding the sleeves because you know as well as I that they are not going to fit. Maybe I'll just make it sleeve less and get a sweater, which I really don't have money for........

If I didn't add the hood to the cardi that I made I could have used that.

sorry, just feeling down, it's this and a bunch of other stuff.

On page 2 is a link for pictures of the dress.....

Um, why aren't the sleeves going to fit? Just because you added the dart?

Pin the sleeves in well, then baste (by hand) really well, go over it twice if you need to to make sure it is secure. Both sleeves, then see how they fit.

I am working on a dress, and the sleeves weren't perfect, I needed more fabric to go over my shoulder, so I had to scootch the fabric down at the top of the shoulder to get the smallest seam possible, but it was enough and the sleeves fit much better.

You can also consider using a contrasting fabric for the sleeves. For instance, you can use a sheer type of chiffon or lacy fabric in the same color as the dress.

Or can you make a small cap sleeve? I was keeping that option open as my pattern had pieces for cap sleeves and long sleeves.

I'm really not good enough at this to attempt a dress at this point. I have to one to guide me. I need to SEE something done first. I think I'm just gonna take a nap. I am feeling very over whelmed and very much a lone. I have searched for classes. Sorry, it's just a down day for me.

There, you need great big hugs! Take your nap, shake it off, and then have another look.
I presume you are adding bust darts? If so your sleeve should still work ok.
Many of us learn/sew/fit alone and it IS frustrating sometimes! I've been known to have a meltdown...behind my shut and locked sewing room door....
It sounds like you have already made tremendous progress with your dress so don't despair! You ARE good enough to finish your dress! Believe in yourself; your PR friends believe in you too!
Remember to smile while you're sewing and have FUN!
Take care,
Gail

Thank you Gail. I don't have much time, as the wedding is on saturday. I di have a woman in the building that I work in, said she would guide me, but she has been sick and her eyes have been bothering her too. (I work in a senior citizen apartment building)

I have already cover stitched the seams which also means that I trimmed them................

Hi Nora,
Nothing like a little time pressure to send us over the edge...unfortunately. However the dress works out for you this week, it may help to keep in mind that the wedding is what will be remembered, not what you wear. Yes, easier said than done, I know!
I'm off for a mini-vacation this week & look forward to reading an update from you when I return. And nooooo, I didn't get my pants finished to wear this week but oh well...there are some really nice fabric stores in Asheville that will be sure to cheer me right up, lol!
Take care & I hope you have a wonderful week. Things have a way of working out...I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you'll receive the help you need and complete your dress.

Gail

Gail,

From you mouth to God's ear. I talk to Shula today and she told me to come to her apt after work and she will help me! Thank you so much for your kind words. I don't think you will ever know how much they meant to me.

I took a little road trip yesterday all over eastern Pa. I have never done anything like that before I am from the Jersey shore, drove into PA and stopped a few places I have never been, then headed down to Phily. I got a little fabric on 4th st, then treated myself to a Phily cheese stake at Jimmy's. ALL by myself! It was very freeing and gave me a bit of head time that I needed.

At least I will have a hand tomorrow and that will help make me feel a little better. I will be doing a reading fro my nephews wedding. If I have to wear a cardi or something over the dree, oh well. I am wearing it, no matter what it looks like ( the front looks great)

Thank you again Gail, I hope you enjoy your mini vacation. I need to plan one for myself!

Nora :)

Hi Nora,

I wish I'd seen your post earlier today! Hang in there, I don't have anyone to help me, either, except when my mom comes to visit (I live in Houston and she lives in St. Louis, so she doesn't get to help me often).

Are the darts you're adding from the side seam or the armhole? If from the side seam, then your sleeves should still fit. If from the armhole, that would mean that the sleeves as cut and sewn are actually bigger than you need, and can easily be cut down. Is this what happened? If so, post again and I can talk you through the sleeve alteration.

If the dart needs to come from the side seam and you've already cut off the seam allowance at the side seam, you can still put the dart in - you will just have to press it UPWARD, instead of down, because then you don't need any extra material for dart legs. This also looks more youthful (not really sure why everyone normally folds them down).

Let us know if your friend was already able to help you, though! I've been trying to fight my way through getting a basic knit T-shirt pattern to work with an FBA such that I don't have to add a dart, and it's been troublesome. (I have no problems with darted wovens, but this was really sticky.) I finally think I've got it after looking at Debbie Cook's sewing blog. Now if I could just kick this H1N1 bug that my son gave me so that I have the energy to sit down and fix the pattern!! Yup, I can relate to your troubles! Take care, and lots of hugs!!

Thank you Terri.

I do hope that you are feeling better. The woman who told me she would help me from the beigining is a seamstress from Poland. In her younger days, people used to pay up to $1000 for her to make a dress or suit. She has been sick on and off and unable to help me. She wasn't going to make, just guide me.

I asked her yesterday if she could just take a look and tell me what to do. Wish me luck. If it was just the dress that was the problem, that I could handle. I just have a lot on my plate at the moment and I really need to get myself out of this funk.

Thank you for you kind offer of help. I will be back later today and let you know how it goes.

Nora :)

You're very welcome, Nora! I know that you have too much stress going on, with your husband losing his job, and I'm sure additional stuff, too. Hang in there - I'm sure that if your friend feels up to helping you, that will be the easiest and best solution! I'm praying for you and your family, and especially your husband's job and all the attendant ramifications of that. I can really understand why you'd be in a funk from all that's going on. Lots of hugs for you!!
