I want to make a shirt for my boyfriend for Christmas but don't know what size to make... and because I want this to be a surprise I can't ask him to measure his chest. Snooping in his closet to measure one of his shirts won't be all that easy because he lives a few states away...

The other night he mentioned that he bought a new size 40 jacket. The Burda pattern I want to use starts at 46, but I'm not sure whether this is closely correlated to RTW sizing. Does anyone know what chest size a size 40 is?

Dress shirts are by collar & CB Sleeve length.
For instance 15- 32.
Call Nordstrom men's dept and I bet they would be able to help you figure it out. On the Burda pattern take note of what the actual chest measure is.

Burda's size chart says a US size 40 is a Burda size 50. The charts are in the magazine and can be downloaded at their website.

A pattern for a woven shirt probably has a 40in. chest and a 15.5in. collar. I wouldn't make a shirt for him that has a collar that he has to button all the time. Fitting a shirt is much less forgiving than fitting a jacket. A knit shirt or shirt that fits loosely and that he won't be buttoning the collar on will probably work fine.

38-40 is typically considered medium in menswear, if that helps narrow down your choices.

With a great wardrobe that's still in the flat-fabric stage.
