Date: 12/16/09 2:59 PM Is there anyone out there that has a great dane? I want to make a coat for my Aunts Great Dane, Duke. I kinda want it to be a surprise so I don't want to ask for his measurements....I have made many a large dog coat, but not this large. My pattern that I have used works for an overweight boxer......(poor girl! But she is warm). I wonder if someone could tell me how long a typical Dane's back is (from base of neck to base of tail)? and I guess the size of the largest part of the chest. |

Date: 12/16/09 3:32 PM Maybe you could look at some websites about Great Danes? The wikipedia page or the AKC page with info about them might have average sizes/measurements. I googled 'great dane coat' and found this site - they sell coats and so tell you where you need to measure. Or you could maybe try making one in the same style as these, which don't seem to be so fitted that the measurements need to be exact. The 'how to measure' section on that last website also has typical sizes for breeds. |

Date: 12/16/09 3:34 PM When I was looking for a coat for my dog Fenway. I found this pattern for large dogs. The model is a great dane.

Date: 12/18/09 1:58 PM That's a cute pattern, but...... I read the description on the back. There is no way that would fit a Great Dane in the back length nor the weight. My sister owned Great Danes and they're big. I also noticed it is an artist rendering (drawing) and not a photo. I think there would have to be some pattern changes. |

Date: 1/23/10 11:59 AM Yes, I have a 135lb, 4 year old Great Dane. She is about 32in. from the bace of her neck to the top of her tail. This is about how long her back is. Hope I helped! |

Date: 1/23/10 12:04 PM OH! Sorry I forgot to mention that you will probably have to get a measurement for how deep the dogs chest is. My Dane has a very deep chest. |

Date: 1/23/10 2:01 PM Wish I had a need for a coat for my dog. They are so cute. But, with her thick coat and our mild winters, it would be vanity alone.
Nonetheless, it's such a nice idea to make your aunt's dog a coat. I would think she would be beyond pleased. I'd definitely want one for a short-haired dog in a cold climate. -- Edited on 1/23/10 2:04 PM -- |

Date: 1/26/10 5:02 PM I have that pattern discussed above. Definitely will not work for a Great Dane. The back of the pattern says for dogs up to 46 lbs., max 23" neck, max 15" from shoulder to last rib, and max 24" neck. It didn't even fit my staffordshire terrier without adding some changes
