hi, i am having a hard time understanding what she is doing when it comes to the added extensions if you have to add more than 1" to the side seams. she is trying to explain how the bust extension must match the sleeve/arm holes must match. does anyone have her information for fitting? i have both of her books and have no clue what she is talking about. thanks! if you do have this book, it's the section about adding extensions. thanks!

Glad you asked. I've puzzled over this too and didn't get it either! Hope someone can answer you (and me!).

The Sew/Fit Manual by Ruth Oblander, Doris Ekern, and Nancy Luedtke Zieman, 1978, and newer additions, has a more detailed explanation. They show you step by step. I would think that it would be very involved trying to describe this over the phone, but maybe they will be able to help you.

Nancy helped write this book, but in her own book she was probably limited to space and didn't go into the full explanation.

Lynnelle, I've been up for three nights trying to figure out what she is talking about. When I contact them maybe they can break it down for me. I have "Fitting Finesse" and "Pattern Fitting with confidence" and the DVD that came with this one. Forgot that I had one by her and now have two books, maybe I will sell one. One is signed and one is not...any way..... She doesn't explain anything about the extensions on the DVD. Maybe it's hidden somewhere or maybe I skipped over that part. The pivot and slide method works great for the bust, waist, hip and sleeve adjustment if it is an 1" or less.

I haven't actually added the extensions, but I did read about it when I bought the book. I reread it recently when I bought the wrong size range for a pattern and thought I might have to add extensions in the bust area.

I think the gist(sp?) of it is that you have to make sure that the sleeve and bodice seams will match. You have to increase both, sleeve first, and you have to complete the pivot process before adding extensions. Add as much as allowed by pivoting, and then add the rest with extensions. The exact amounts and how you arrive at them depend on where you need the extra room and how much.

I thought I understood when I read it, but as I said, I haven't actually tried to do it. From what I remember, the tricky bit seemed to be figuring out how much to pivot for the bust so it would match the sleeve after extending both of them.

I have the VHS tape of Fitting Finesse so I'll check it tomorrow and see if there's anything there. It's been a while since I've watched it. I checked the book and think I understand it, but I have no clue how to put it across. My first guess is that you use the pivot and slide to a certain point, then add the extensions for the extra room needed. I THINK she says in her book that you can't go past 5''.

Thanks Rhonda, I will have to check out the DVD from start to finish. Also, the math does not make sence to me, maybe it's me.

I believe you add the extensions before you pivot and slide.

You can only pivot out up to 1 inch per side before you distort the design. So if you must add more that 1 inch per side seam, then add your extensions to both the side seams and the sides of the sleeves (to increase the width of the sleeve), then pivot the rest of the increase.

That's why the math doesn't make sense. You must figure out how much you need total. Then subtract 1 inch per seam for the pivot, BUT add the extension first in an amount equal to the total minus the 1 inch per pivot. LOL

It sounds confusing to me and I understand it. LOL

OK, the math is right, but you pivot first then add the extensions. Sorry for the confusion.
