New Year! New Sew Along, New Thread. This thread is for anyone who wants to join us in the one garment a month sew along. We had great response in '08 and '09 and we are ready to continue it this year too.

Here are a few guidelines. Since this an informal sew-along there are not many rules but here are few you should stick to.

1. The project should be started and finished in the same month.
2. The project should be a wearable garment (accessories will not be counted)
3. The project can be for yourself/friend/family/charity etc but it should still be a garment.
4. If the project is new, a review is desirable but not required.
5. When you are ready to show us the garment of the month, click on post reply on this topic, change the subject to [Month] - Finished Project and post your project there. By doing it this way, its easy for me to find the finished projects and post them to the final tally. Example March - Finished Garment.

Here are some tips I posted last year.

1. I have NO time.
Solution: If you think about it, it's not too hard to take out 4-5 hours from a 30 day month.

2. Nothing fits me, what's the point?
Solution: That's why you sew! We are all real women. Nobody has the perfect body. But we can't give up. If you have problems fitting the bust, start there. Make a shell top. If you can, take some classes. PR online classes are really easy to fit in your schedule.

3. I have so many patterns/fabrics. I don't know what to make.
Solution: We've all been there. Overwhelmed by the choices we have. Narrow it down to a few and post here. We'll try to help you make a decision.

4. I started something but did not finish.
Solution: This is encouraging. You did start but if you werent able to finish in the same month, don't let it become a UFO. Continue working on it and you WILL finish. And I promise next month will be better.

5. My sewing room is a mess.
Solution: Ok so you need more than 4-5 hours now. But take the FlyLady approach. Set your timer to 15 minutes and clean your sewing room. After 15 minutes STOP! Walk away. Don't think about it. Repeat this every day until you are happy with the way it looks. Chances are that when you are done you will sew not one but many garments in that month.

6. I have been sewing, just NOT for myself
Solution: You know... the more I think about it the more I want to say, thats OK, you can still include it in the one garment a month sew along but as long as you make sure that you sew for yourself every other month at least

7. I did sew but not garments
Solution: It's still better than not sewing at all. And if it's for gift giving that's alright. But if you find yourself avoiding garments because of fit or any other reason (try to ask yourself why!) then it's time you gave garments a shot!

The whole point of this sew along is to motivate. So I may come across as "pushy" but I REALLY want you guys to sew! I've noticed that I am a lot happier since I started this sew along because it's guiding me to sew every month and I am forced to take the time out for it.

If you TRY, YOU CAN DO IT!

I want to join! By July, I usually tend to slow down in my project finishing enthusiasm.

I love this idea, Deepika, and your tips for getting motivated. I must have missed this in 2009. I think I'm tentatively in!

Subject: January - Finished Project Date: 1/12/10 4:58 PM

I already have a completed garment for January!!! It's a skirt I've long meant to sew. I'm not 100% happy with it, but it's not that bad either and I hope I'll end up wearing it anyway.
Here is my review.

Yesterday I also cut out a jersey top...

I've so many projects in my to-sew-list. I hope this Sew Along will help me getting things done as much as it did last year

I'm in! This is actually one of my resolutions! I sew for a living and I've found that I never make time to sew for myself unless it's because I need it in a pinch. I'm also adding another rule for myself (although feel free to follow along). I'll be making things from stash only. I'm on a spending freeze as DH and I save to buy our first house, so if I want something, the fabric has to be from stash. Now to pick out project number one!

Subject: Finished garment January Date: 1/12/10 8:13 PM

I'm in for the month of January. I found all my fabric for a purse I wanted to sew, even found the pattern and than forgot to purchase it. Now I'm not sure I'll get a chance to finish it for the refashion contest.

I had a small piece of knit fabric left from another project so I pulled out my New Look 6807, made adjustments, cut it out, sewed, hemmed even posted a review last night. Completing that project with a successful result was very satisfying as the first version didn't end well.

Here's the link to review:New Look 6807

I can totally relate to this -- I sew for a living and I sew for my grandkids and my kids but I'm afraid to sew for myself.

I was going to try the garment a month last year and it just didn't happen. Now I have my studio back and in full operation and I can be so much more productive so I'm hoping to make the garment a month as well as some other personal sewing goals -- I already have one cut out for January which is saying a lot for me.

I'm trying to largely sew from stash -- both personally and for the business product line (custom orders are another matter). I didn't realize how much fabric and notions I had until we had to store everything under plastic in a corner of the basement while they jackhammered and reconstructed things down there. Let's just say it's in the 1000's of metres.

Yikes!!!
