UFO Contest
Sponsored by

This contest is to get those started but never finished projects FINISHED. Only projects started and stalled before around December 1st will qualify as an UnFinished Object (UFO) for this contest.

1. In the month of February 2010, enter the projects which you complete but which were started and somehow stalled before December 2009.

2. A UFO may be a project in the muslin stage and stalled due to fit frustrations, cut in final fabric but not yet sewn; partially sewn; or just waiting for the finishing touches. Mending does not count as a UFO for this contest. Fabric matched with a pattern but no actual work done does not count. Your current projects don't count if you've worked on it during the month of December, even if you started it prior to December.

3. Please post on the contest discussion board a list of all your qualifying UFOs before you start finishing them, and a guess on how long this UFO exists. If you find another UFO that qualifies during the contest it may be still added.

4. Write a review about your UFO, including why it has been an unfinished object for so long. Note if there were problems in the pattern or project, and please include how you overcame them so readers can benefit from your experience. All reviews must be posted before 11:59 Eastern Time February 28th, as shown on this website.

5. Enter the review into the contest and Assign points per the table below.

--- 4 pts- fabric cut out &/or pattern muslined, final completely unsewn

--- 3 pts- more than half the project is left to do

--- 2 pts- less than half the project is left to do, but it is more than just hemming or attaching buttons

--- 1 pt- the final steps such as hemming or sewing on buttons

The winner is the person who gets the most points at the end of the month. There will also be a 2nd prize drawn at random from all the entries (excluding the 1st place winner).

*Rules that apply to all contests:

1. All reviews must be entered for submission by 11:59 PM Eastern Time on the last day of the contest. Contest dates will be listed for each contest.

2. Unless otherwise stated in the rules, patterns may be drafted, tweaked, and muslined before the contest date, but fabric for the pieces entered may not be laid out or cut till the start date of the contest. Fabric may be pretreated before the contest date.

3. Items intended for sale, or for which you were or will be paid to make, do not qualify for any contest, but items made for charity are welcome!

4. Unless otherwise stated in the rules, all reviews written for a contest entry must include a picture of the entry.

Contest Eligibility

1. Any member of Pattern Review, either paying (FoPR) or non-paying, who's been a registered member on the site for 90 days prior to the start of a contest is eligible to enter.

2. Any member of Pattern Review, either paying (FoPR) or non-paying, who's been a registered member on the site for 90 days prior to the end of a contest is eligible to vote in a contest.

3. Any member who's won 1st place in a contest on Pattern Review ended in the previous 4 months is ineligible to win another contest (for that 4 month period).

*As far as a UFO in the muslin stage, it does not have to be cut in its final fabric. However, a TNT (tried and true) pattern, or any pattern for that matter, that has been matched to fabric but not cut out in a muslin fabric or final fabric does not count.

Time to bring out those UFO's! As last year's winner, I can tell you how wonderful it felt finishing up projects that I had stored away for years. I had leftover UFO's after last year's contest and I even added a few more in 2009. I only have 8 qualifying items but I'm motivated to finish them up in February. Come join in!

Did I read that right it can't be partially sewn? I have some projects that are close but not done and this would definitely help me to finish them.

Is this the official thread for the UFO contest?

I think there is one little loophole you might want to close up - and I wouldn't even have thought of it except I happen to fit it! I began a jacket muslin in Oct. Then stalled. I did not work on it at all in Dec. BUT I did take apart the muslin (15 minutes) on about Jan. 2. The rules say you can't have worked on it in Dec., but don't mention Jan. ~ though I assume that is the intent?

If these are the official rules - thanks for posting them. Now to finalize digging out my qualifying projects.
Blessings,
Patti

It can be partially sewn, it would just mean less points. The points are awarded on how much is left to finish.

I'm in! I have a robe all cut out for my daughter but not a bit of it has been sewn.

Would finishing a quilt count or is this for garments only?

By reading to the first semi colon under rule number 2, it states that a project in the muslin state must be cut out in its final fabric (prior to December.) I've just sent a message to the contest committee for clarification. When I hear back, I'll let you know.

As far as for working on it in January, it would be disqualified even if you started it before December.

Quilts were allowed last year and the rules have not changed to disqualify quilts as projects. So yes, quilts do count.

I am not understanding the points,, so each entry ONLY gets 4, 3, 2, or 1 point,, how is it decided if say more than one person has a pattern cut out,, but no sewing has been done ont it? they would both be 4 points right,, so how is that decided?

It's an honor system, essentially, when it comes to assigning points to your unfinished projects. Last year, I took before and after pictures to add to my reviews but itís neither a rule nor necessary. The points get added up as you enter your items. At the end, the person with the most points wins.

If you have more questions about this, please feel free to ask.
