I fell headoverheels in love with the February LMB ruffly-edged double collar cardi jacket (#29, page 75) ... (I hope LittleJazzBird sees this post and scans the jacket picture in!)

As I'm on the hunt for jersey and matching ribbing jersey for the cardi, I decided to take the idea of the double layer ruffly-edge collar and apply it to Kwik Sew 3740 cowl.

I sewed the top's shoulder seams together; then I cut out the two cowl collar pieces. I took the pattern's under collar and removed 1/2" from the outer edges, to make it 1" narrower all around than the pattern's upper collar. The under collar would now be the new upper collar (you want the narrowest collar on top, then the wider collar, then the top body.)

The pattern's original upper collar would then be the new under collar.

I sewed the back neck seam of the new under collar by machine, then pressed the seam open and from the right side I coverstitched the seam. I then did the same to the new upper collar.

Now I had two separate cowl circles, one narrower than the other. For each circle, I lettuce-edge stitched the outer edges with my serger to create the rufflies.

Then I made a sandwich of the body top right side up, then the widest collar right side up, then the narrowest collar, right side up, and machine-stitched all three in together in a 1/4" seam.

I then pressed the seam towards the top body, then from the right side of the top, (underneath the ruffle cowls) I coverstitched the seam allowance down. The cowl collars cover the top stitching, and on the inside of the top, the coverstitch loops cover the seam allowances and keep them flat to the top.

I now have a cowl top with double ruffly-edged cowls, and I love love love it!!!

Lynn

I wish I could see the finished shirt! It sounds very pretty. Just a minute a go I had put the cowl neck on my list of patterns to get!

That sounds really interesting. I can't wait to see a photo. On a side note... where do you get your LMB?

Your ruffly neckline sounds beautiful and fun. But I have a question I'm unsure of. Since I haven't been sewing for a few years, I'm out of the loop on some sewing terms. Can you tell me what it means to coverstitch? I've heard it a lot here and am clueless as to just what it means. And does this site have a place to go to brush up on all the abreviations? Like LMB? Some I can figure out, like TNT, but most I'm lost. And I'd also love to see a pic of your new cowl top, really sounds nice. Thanks.

Thanks for posting the cardi photo - now I get it. I love the lettuce edge treatment on this knit. Never would have thought to do that to a rib knit. I cannot wait to see your top. It sounds wonderful. You must post a review also.

Thanks soooooooooooo much for posting that.

Oh, I wish I could get my hands on that issue of LMB (or it's French equivalent). I haven't been able to find one

Lynn, now that I have seen that, I can imagine your top is really nice. I know that you are most likely busy with work and busy with the downtown Vancouver Olympic scene but PRETTY PRETTY PRETTY PRETTY PRETTY please, somehow post a photo?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
