Subject: Pants Problem - To Show or not to show? Date: 2/8/10 5:07 PM I was contemplating if I should share my learning experience, I mean it really look BAD But then again, it took me 2 days to figure out, there is no way to save it.
So I was thinking, why not save some one else the frustration. I think this is the best lesson in fitting and fabric I could have ever learned.
I made a video with the bad pants, and then I show you the exact same pants in a better fabric.
You be the judge which one look better, and next time when you go fabric shopping for pants. Please remember my BAD experience. So that you will sew beautiful pants

Date: 2/8/10 6:52 PM That's a great demo of your pants.
I have an issue with pants as I tend to wear jeans, and maybe khakis. I don't wear many slacks, so I'm not exactly sure what I need. Though I do now have lots of nice slack fabric from the recent big sale at Fabric.com
Yet I'm still working on jeans...oh well.
Oh, and the pockets were interesting too, how they did stick out, even though they were sewn appropriately.
Thanks. ------ Annette

Date: 2/8/10 10:11 PM Thanks for posting that video. It was really interesting to see the effect of a different type of fabric. I would also like to offer up one comment. I found it really hard to see some of the details you were referring to when you were modeling the brown pants. I'm not sure if it was my computer, or the lighting in the room where you did your filming, or if the fabric was simply too dark, but a lot of the details are hard to see. In the future, you might want to try making lighter colored samples for your films, to ensure that the details aren't lost, or perhaps try adding some extra lighting in your room. Your video was helpful, and it would be nice to see precisely what you're talking about! |

Date: 2/9/10 3:35 PM I second what Froggy Becky says about being able to see details. I think if this had been shot in a room that wasn't all white with some spot lighting it would've been fine.
Either that or use a sample that was done in a medium value color.
I looked at the other vids on your site and even with the dim lighting they were easier to see than this pants one.
But I do take your word for it that the fabrics make the fit. <:) |

Idunna, a lot of us have this issue, you aren't alone. Like you I don't wear "slacks". There aren't a lot of patterns available for casual pant fabrics. Most patterns are for slacks or trousers which need drapey fabric as Patricia demonstrated. It a pet peeve of mine with the pattern companies.
It's so important to match fabric and patterns but it's hard when we like to wear casual pants and the companies only give us slack patterns. It's probably why the Jalie jeans pattern and their new classic trousers are so popular. Jalie are actually drafting patterns for modern pants, not slacks.
Good video Patricia, thanks for sharing. It demonstrates the importance of fabric plus how we should embrace the wrinkles if we want to use casual fabrics, unless we want to send ourselves grey. I just wish more pattern companies would wake up and give us something other than slack and trouser patterns. ------ Belinda. Melbourne, Australia

Reply to Sew4Fun Date: 3/7/10 9:12 AM It's probably why khaki pants that aren't fitted look so unflattering on everyone! They have no drape and you're right, slacks need to have drape to look good or they add weight. Any fabric that is not drapey needs to be used in a more fitted pant. ------ www.nancyksews.blogspot.com |

Reply to Patricia Schoeman Date: 3/7/10 9:17 AM Wow, there really is a major difference! I too leave out the pockets. They hit my hips at the widest point, the upper hip and no matter what I do they just can't lay flat. ------ www.nancyksews.blogspot.com |
