this is in a nice wool wine crepe which I bound in black to try to give it a bit more oomph, but it still looks like it belongs on the governess. Is it time to admit defeat?

The governess, lol! Perhaps the skirt and jacket need to live separate lives to be stylish. If the jacket got some amazing buttons and you wore it with a print skirt or with dark jeans if you wear such things, it would change the mood. The skirt might be just the thing to go with a beautiful sweater.

Or just put the whole thing in the magic closet for a while. Out of sight and out of mind have transformative powers.

Talbot's spring catalogue is showing suits like these dressed up with large fabric flowers - very pretty. I think you can log on to their web site to see exactly what I mean - plan on making sone of the flowers to dress up some plain looking jackets - also says S-P-R-I-N-G

Thanks Sewliz and Clin for those thoughts, maybe I should separate them and do something with buttons or flowers to the jacket. I'm off to look up the reference now.

I agree about separate lives for the two pieces. Maybe try jeans that flatter you, along with a shaped top or turtleneck with the jacket. The skirt with a black twinset. Just a thought......... happy experimenting.

The fabric flowers were exactly what popped into my mind when I saw this. Lots of good tutorials online and easy to do.

Speaking of fabric flowers, here are some nice examples of ways to make a pencil skirt work well in a non-suit way, just imagine the tweed is a wine wool crepe. With a leather jacket here, a top with some interest and a pretty accessory, the flower. I can see black boots with that outfit. Another flower accent here with a tunic-ish top that manages well without a jacket. I'm hoping the shoes are different and pretty for this look and are not flight attendant pumps.

Here I am spouting fashion advice as I sit here in my yoga pants and old tee shirt. I think I'll go to my sewing room now.

That's a good couple of links Sewliz. I was thinking that the skirt would end up as just another boring pencil skirt, sweater pulled down over it, but I really like the idea of a short jacket, untailored, and an accent somewhere.

Yes- admit defeat, and send me the jacket by mail

Seriously, just wear the pieces separately, they are lovely.

If you do want a suit, how about a black skirt with the jacket.
I think a big soft cream cowl neck sweater would be nice with the skirt.
Boots and tights will be more current than thin hose and dress shoes.
