Hello to fellow Sydney sew-ers. Don't whether I'm in the right place or what I'm doing, but it occurs to me that having lived in Sydney for more than a decade, I might be missing out on something (as a sew-er) as I've never been to Cabramatta.

Have I just missed a fabric buying day out in Sydney? Did you get to Cabramatta? Is there anything there that you can't get elsewhere? Specifically, I'm looking for nylon chiffon and can't find it anywhere else - does anyone know if I will find any in Cabramatta?

Thanks.

Brond,
perhaps you'd like to contact the ASG as the Hilltop sewing group (near Dee Why - Beacon Hill actually) is doing a trip to Cabramatta this Tuesday (16th March)!!!

good timing perhaps!
you may want to call the group coordinator - if you'd like to meet up with them there, perhaps

hi you will love Cabramatta there are quite a few shops there that sell lots of different fabrics expensive and cheap there was an article in a Australian Stitches Magazine some time back directing you to where the shops are however a couple have sadly since closed
I noticed a new one yesterday in Hughes st Cabramatta heading towards the station I have not been in this one but if its anything like all the others it will be great

In the next suburb Canley Vale there are two shops that sell every colour imaginable of threads for your overlockers and notions a lot of industry people buy from these outlets

I dont know where you live but i would suggest you join the ASG and I know the Penrith group are going to Cabramatta on their next day out

How come I didn't see you there yesterday?

I think you'll find just about every type of fabric available somewhere in Cabramatta. It's not as good as it used to be, but still plenty of choice. My favourite two stores are located in the street with the pedestrian mall (sorry can't remember the name, but impossible to miss), on the railway side.

BTW, it's best shopping with cash, and if it's quantity (eg multiple dance outfits) you're after, the storeholders will bargain.

Thanks Gillian,

I've obviously very new to all of this, as I didn't know of the ASG until now. I'll follow up with them.

Thank you.

I myself followed this thread with interest. I had visited Cabramatta approximately 8 years ago and have not been back since, as it's quite a distance from the inner city.

I am thinking of re-visting with the hope of getting some knit fabric bargains. Having recently become unemployed and not finding much work, I am even more inclined to chase a great price fabric.

Thanks for the advice and info posted here.

Unfortunately I couldn't join the ASG group's trip to Cabramatta and the person I corresponded with regarding Cabramatta couldn't help me with my fabric query.
So, Roxxygrl, you wouldn't be starting your trip from anywhere near the CBD, would you? If you'd like some company on the trip....

Another source of inexpensive fabric is Crowle Home between Top Ryde and Rhodes. It has donated fabric and often lots of it - all sorts! And the prices are very reasonable too!

I enjoyed Cabramatta but only bought two metres of pink/purple fabric (yes i have two daughters!!)... There was almost too much choice (can one really say that?)
however, I'm sort of tempted to go back. On the other hand I am already having problems sewing up (well storing really) the stuff I already have!!

If you are driving - go into the multistorey car park but not about 1130-1200ish when it is v busy.
Take cash.
Note which shops you are nearby when you come out of the car park entrance - makes it much easier to track back to your car later!
Don't carry a big bag - to be honest some of the shops are so small and so tightly packed with rolls of fabric that it can be a challenge getting in/ out of them!!
The noodle house near the western end of the shops on john street (on same side as Gloria jeans) does a good sized chicken and rice or noodle and soup dish for $11.
You might even think of taking a cool bag as the meat prices are very good. !!
I'd agree with the comment about the two shops near the ped.mall off john street. I too preferred them. There are also shops selling kids clothes at a very inexpensive rate.
It took me about an hour to get to/from the upper north shore - terrey hills area.

eta these are just all the thoughts that occurred to me after reading these posts. I hope they make some sort of sense!!

Oh I am sorry, I just saw your message now Brond. I already went out, plan on going back though at some time.

I had the hardest time finding parking and didn't stay for too long. I wish I had seen the later responses and suggestions regarding parking and stores as the whole thing is a little overwhelming.

As I didn't have much time (because of parking) I didn't browse much.

I wanted to look into the stock more as what I sew is casuals and knits mostly and a lot of the fabric was more formal wear/ bridal type. I know the casual stuff was there, but I had to have time to search.

I did pick up a few bargains so I plan to go back one day when I have the cash and time.
