Can someone please tell me what a "swayback adjustment"is? I hear and read mention of it but have no idea what it is or how to do it.
Could this be why when I make a skirt, the back hem is shorter than the front hem?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

In depth discussion on sway back alterations

Basically, so-called sway back is from curvature of the spine that gives your back extra curve and is caused by poor posture and carrying children. Personally, I think that's all a load of horse hockey.

The way I think about "sway-back" is as if I need to do a "Full backside alteration" because my backside is deeper than what the pattern companies draft for. I see it as exactly the same thing as me having to do a Full Bust Adjustment because I'm carrying around a pair of D's and the commercial companies draft for a B cup.

The Perfect Fit method is very good, as long as you take out the extra wedge in the shoulder. That isn't explained in the tutorial, but it will make the shoulder follow the correct line, everything all fixed. If you don't understand what I'm talking about, just take half an hour and play with it on an actual pattern piece. It all makes perfect sense and I'm a little lazy to make a tutorial right now. Maybe tomorrow.

And yes, it is likely you have a "sway back" if your back hem is shorter than the front. You want to add a wedge of fabric to the top center back of the skirt, tapering to nothing at the side seams. That way your skirt will hang properly.

I agree! I think for *some* it's a posture problem--and poor posture/weak abs can make it more pronounced--but for most of us it's just how we're made. FWIW, my chiropractor says that people with a bit of 'swayback' have fewer disk problems than those with straight backs.

Personally, I think of it more as 'short back length'. My back-to-waist measurement is 1 1/2" shorter than my front; so any fitted bodices or jackets will puddle and bag in back even if they fit in front, in addition to skirts that are short in back. This is a bit of a challenge, and why there is so much discussion about it.
Just to mention, I've had good luck modifying RTW skirts by shortening the front(as opposed to adding to the back), so the hem hangs straight and hangs properly, instead of hugging my tummy. Since skirts are always too long for me anyway, that works.

Can anybody PLEASE recommend an online video demo, or a really good step by step illustration of the swayback pattern adjustment?
