Don't know if anyone has been looking for this stuff, but my local Joann's has started stocking that lightweight, non-woven fabric that all the commercial shopping bags are made of. The stuff that's kind of like Pellon....

It's kept back in the drapery and tablecloth vinyl area, and they've got about half a dozen patterns and solids on bolts.

I just bought some last week in a nice brown and turquoise print. It was very inexpensive at $2.99/yd and very wide. It hasn't decided what it is going to be yet. It might become a tablecloth for the patio.

I need to check this out. Is the fabric washable? News reports about germs lurking in unwashed bags makes sense and I am now thinking I will make some washable ones.

Hi,

From my understanding the fabric-like shopping bags are washable, but in cold water.

Since they are actually made from recycled plastic bags, they cannot be put in the dryer or they will melt.

The bags I purchased (Earthwise) recommend:

Hand wash in cold water.

Do not bleach.

Do not tumble dry.

They are also easy to reinforce those side seams. So it makes them last a little longer.

On Project Runway Australia this week they had to make their garments out of the shopping bags. Some quite amazing creations, but they found that the fabric melted when they tried to press it.
