Hi friends,

Butterick 5454 View C

I just purchased this pattern, and searched for all reviews here on PR. I was pleased that there were some for View C, the border print version. I have the border print, which has a border on both sides and a design that runs from border to border. It is not a true stripe, but it definitely runs from side to side, as if it were a stripe.

So, I open the pattern and read it (yes, I am weird that way) and to my surprise, the front and back pieces are placed the same way on the View C layout as they are for Views A & B. This means that the front and back skirt pieces show the hem at the border, BUT the front and back bodice pieces are laying with the neck at the cut end and the sides running parallel with the border print! In other words, the stripes will go around my body on the back and the front. There is only one grain line on the bodice front, and the center back is traced and pieced together to form one solid back piece.

So I don't think I am a complete ninny, because I know this is not going to work; the center back has to line up with the center back of the skirt, but I don't see any mention about this in the reviews of this pattern.

I guess my question are these: Did I get a misprinted pattern? Am I missing something really big here? If I just add another grain line to accommodate the correct layout for a one-way print, is it at a 90 degree angle from the existing grain line?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated,

Terri

I suspect the folk doing the cutting layout just didn't think through the ideas of a border properly.

I would go ahead and cut your bodice peices on the cross grain (90deg to the grain line) to ge the best effect of your fabric design. Draw new grain lines if you think it would be helpful with layout. From the sound of it you will be matching stripes, so I would also draw matching marks on relevant skirt/bodice peices as that is also helps with lining them up.

Thank you Kayseri so much for responding. I knew it was wrong, but I just didn't want to assume anything! I will redraw grain lines on the front bodice piece, but I think I can just use the center back as a grain line on the back bodice.

Thanks once again for helping me out.

Terri

Just an FYI for the future:

I emailed Butterick with my concerns regarding the placement of the pattern pieces, and I received this answer today. Here it is:

Dear Terri,

Thank you for your e-mail to Butterick concerning the layout for B5454, Dress C. When problems arise, we are always happy to help in any way we can. Your reasoning is sound. The layout for C is not correct. This layout will need to be revised. The bodice pieces 1 and 2 need to rotate to the crosswise grain for dress C. Hopefully, you are asking these questions before you cut and can turn the pieces accordingly. We regret your problem with the layout. If you have further questions or have already cut your fabric, please let me know.

Sincerely,

NOTE: When responding, please include this e-mail in your reply.

Since I have not cut my fabric, or the pattern pieces, I will just redraw the grain lines as suggested.

Sew long,

Terri
