Help.

I am just making the Amy Butler Birdie Sling with some fabric given to me by my DD for my birthday.

I have pleated the exteriour main panel (taken out and done it again) but it doesn't match with the Band. The band is 1" too short.

I have just got the pattern pieces out and the pieces don't match. I know I can fix this by making the pleats bigger but I thougnt I would check if anyone else has had this problem before I did it.

I had the exact same problem (forgot to mention it in my review) when I made this bag and just made the pleats bigger.

Hi .. I have made two of these ... for some reason the Frenchy band didn't fit either .. when I wrote to AB and told her, they wrote me and said "yes, it doesn't fit. You have to MAKE it fit" .. I thought ???? make it fit?? Yes ease it in to fit .. but with the Birdie it just plain does not fit ... I too had to alter the pleats if I remember right to get it to fit ... I posted a review and pics of mine ...

I made a pile of these and don't recall having that problem. The band is curved. When you join two pieces of fabric (one of them curved) you will generally need to twiddle a little bit. This is because different weaves stretch and spread in individual ways. It is often the same with waistline seams.

Oh good grief. And they wonder why people no longer sew . . .

I have made six of these and yes, you do have to ease at the band joining. You are putting a curve to a straight surface so there is some "fiddling" that must occur--just like joining a princess seam at the bust. I love this bag and the people who have received them, love them too. Don't give up! What I have stopped doing with this bag is putting interfacing in the straps if the fabric has any heft to it at all. Otherwise the straps end up being too stiff.

I had the same problem with the pleats. However, I also am confused about sewing the bottom edge of the Exterior Band to the Top edge of the Exterior panel. (Step 6) If I do that, the exterior panel is a lot wider than one inch. (yours was 1 inch wider) Are the instructions correct or should I sew the top edge of the band to the exterior panel?
thanks if you can help me.

The bottom edge of the band is longer than the top edge. Check you have the piece the right way up.

I solved the problem by adjusting all the pleats by equal amounts until the pieces fit. Why they couldnt get it right in the first place I don't know.

My bag is finished and waiting to be reviewed. I must admit it is very comfy to wear but not very easy to use.

It may help to make clips in the seam allowance of the curved edge of the smaller piece. I've made the bag twice and don't remember pieces not fitting.
