Date: 5/19/10 10:58 PM http://mysecretpocket.blogspot.com/ has a tutorial on how to use the Dritz bound buttonhole maker, but since she put it up, her blog has become invite only. Perhaps you can join her blog and access the tutorial?
Here's a link to the tutorial: tutorial.
It's the only tutorial I know of. From what I've read about the tool, it didn't come with a heck of a lot of instructions when it was made.
Hope this helps!

This tutorial got me interested in the Dritz Buttonhole tool and luckily for me I won an Ebay auction for one. But now that the blog is by invite only, I can't access the tutorial. And can't figure out how one asks to be allowed access.
Hoping Sarai of Colette patterns will do a tutorial soon. Would help the very visual among us to see how it's done.

Date: 5/20/10 2:50 PM I can't figure out how to ask for access either. I saw the tutorial a couple months ago but then I didn't have the buttonhole maker. NOW, I've got the buttonhole maker & can't see the tutorial. Kinda the way my life goes....Ha!Ha! |

Date: 5/20/10 4:43 PM Ebay listing for Dritz Bound Buttonhole Maker
This EBay listing includes a photo of the instructions on the package, if that helps. I suppose the photo will only be available as long as the item is listed. It is readable if you use the zoom and enlarge features.
The Dritz tool is a small metal jig that holds everything in place as you sew a 1-piece welt opening. Kathleen at Fashion Incubator shows this technique for welted pockets in a series of tutorials on the Fashion Incubator website. The Dritz tool holds everything in place and provides a stitching guide for what is essentially a very small single-piece welt opening (compared to a pocket). The Dritz bound buttonhole is constructed, sewn, and cut in the same manner.
I managed to snag one of these at some point in my thrift store wanderings. The original price on the package was $1; the hand-written black marker price indicates that I paid 25 cents.

Date: 2/2/11 8:23 PM I just read a really good article at the Colette Patterns blog with instructions for this tool. I'm lucky enough to have inherited one from my mom and will be trying it out as soon as I can. The finished buttonhole looks so professional.

Date: 2/3/11 11:11 AM I feel like I've seen these little things go for lots and lots of money (more than $50), but I just found four that sold on ebay between $26 and $36 each. I'll confess: I have like three. I have a great local haunt for sewing stuff (fabric, patterns, notions) and whenever I find one, I just get it because it's 25 or 50 cents. One had the original packaging and everything :)

Date: 2/3/11 1:07 PM Try estate sales or thrift stores first. Without directions, 75 cents; with directions, $1 - $1.25 should be the approximate price. (or less, if you're really lucky). They do pop up at these places. -- Edited on 2/3/11 1:09 PM -- ------ I have not yet begun to procrastinate |
