Hi everyone,

I have an original Bernina 830 and was lucky enough to find a wonderful wood Parsons sewing cabinet for it. It's old, of course, and thus did not come with its manual on how to care for the elevator. When I lower the 830 down, the elevator makes a terrible squeal. My husband has tried white grease a few times, but we haven't found just where the grease is supposed to go, obviously. Does anyone own one of these and can tell me how to care for the elevator? It needs lubrication; it's just not obvious where to put it.

Thanks, Candace

Just in case someone is lucky enough to get one of these beautiful wood cabinets with a lift, here is how to grease the elevator and keep it happy!

There is a panel directly behind the platform that holds the SM. Unscrew and remove. Inside you will see 3 shafts. The side shafts are support and the center screw shaft is what powers the platform up and down. Get some white lithium grease in crayon form (not messy) and rub the crayon all over these 3 shafts. Move the elevator up and down to get the grease incorporated. Once done, screw the panel back on. Voilą! A happy, quiet lift!

Thank you for your post. I just got an old Parsons cabinet via Craigslist. A somewhat heavy sewer was selling her grandmothers cabinet due to lack of space. It squealed like a stuck pig every time the lift was engaged. As soon as I got it home I found your post, removed that panel and greased those three rods. It purrs like a kitten now. Thanks for your help.

Next is the insert for my sewing machine. I am off to Tap Plastic to see if they can cut one for my machine. Then it will be completely perfect.

Hi, I just bought a Parsons sewing cabinet with a lift too! I used sewing machine oil. Unplug it first. If you get down and look inside the metal side rails, you will see the track teeth, I oiled them, kinda wipe it and look up inside bottom, you will see a metal kinda pole which turns ... I put a few drops on the joints. Mine wasn't making any 'squeaking', but it is loud to operate! lol! Hope this helps!

What kind of machine will work with these? I don't think my old Kenmore is going to survive the new situation! lol! I got it when I was 14yrs. old, and tomorrow is my Birthday, I'll be 58!

hi! I am brand new to sewing and to this group, and when I googled "Parsons" sewing cabinet, this thread came up as a search result. I am curious, does anyone know how much a Parsons would have cost brand new? Mine is a manual lift, and it have a friend who just bought an electric lift model, both in amazing condition. I read somewhere else they are no longer in production, that they were made between 79-80's, is this accurate? I would surely love any and all advice/tips concerning my beautiful cabinet!
